Cinsault Wines

France. The home of the Eiffel Tower, Napoleon, D-Day, and cinsault grapes. Cinsault wines are usually rose in colour, just like a Parisian sunset, or can be mixed with darker, more robust wines to make a sweeter red wine. Drink cinsault with a rustic, French picnic for a romantic taste of southern France without even leaving home.

This is what some of our customers say

Just wanted to say thanks very much for an excellent prompt service. I`ve had a call to thank me for the beautiful flowers . I will definitely use the service again.

Some wine historians believe that Cinsault grapes didn’t originate in France at all but were imported from the eastern Mediterranean in the earliest days of winemaking. Whatever the Cinsault’s history, it is true that it is one most heat tolerant of all grape varieties, which makes it a staple of the winemaking industries of North Africa. In France, Cinsault grapes are most often to be found in the south of France, particularly in the Languedoc-Roussillon area. Cinsault grapes are the fourth most widely grown variety in France.

The grape is widely cultivated throughout Algeria and Morocco where it is prized for its drought resistance. Though impervious to heat, the grape is very susceptible to pests and disease and so does best in a climate that’s dry as well as hot. Cinsault wines are also made in Lebanon, Italy, Australia and South Africa. In South Africa it was once known as Hermitage, and the Cinsault wines produced from blending the grape with Pinot Noir are known as Pinotages.

Depending upon where it’s grown, the grape is known by a wide variety of other names, including Black Malvoisie, Bourdales Kek, Espagnol (though it is not grown largely in Spain), Moustardier Noir, Prunellas Noir, Oeillade, Picardin noir and Ulliad.

Cinsault wines are generally a blend of Syrah and Mourvèdre, and even Grenache grapes, as well as Cinsault. Cinsault grapes are hardly ever used as a varietal except in South Africa. Instead they are used to provide a fuller body to wines made predominantly from other grapes. The flavor of Cinsault grapes has been described by some wine experts as “meaty.”
