Loire wines are produced from the Loire Valley wine region. The region produces a huge amount of white wine and some reds too. The wines vary due to the differences in grape varieties, the wine making techniques and the location.
They do have several things in common such as the high acid content which brings out the youthful, crispness during the first year. As it goes to the second to fifth year, the dumb phase occurs wherein the flavours are tempered to a great extent. Once they come out of this dumbing period, the result is full flavours and may age very well even into 20 years. The wines also do not use oak for fermentation purposes.

Red wines are made from another important grape variety, Pinot Noir.
Melon de Bourgogne of the Western Loire produces neutral tasting wine. During the cool season, the taste can turn tart. It is the main grape used for Muscadet. Muscadet with ‘Sur Lie’ label have nutty flavour and fruitiness because the yeast cells and grape bits are not filtered.
Loire Wines from the Middle Loire comprised of the areas Vouvray, Tourraine and Chinon make use of the white grape Chenin Blanc. They produce a wide range of wine such as rose, reds, whites, sweet and sparkling. Sparkling Vouvray is a well-known, sparkling wine product of the region.
Upper Loire produces one of the most famous wine in the world called 100% Sauvignon Blanc for white wines produced in Sancerre. Sauvignon Blanc is the most successful grape variety from Loire being grown in countless other wineries all over the world.
