Montepulciano is the name of a small hilltop town in Tuscany, Italy and lends its name to a particular blended wine that is much treasured by connoisseurs. It is a wine that consists of 60-80% Sangiovese grapes with 10-20% Canaiolo Nero grapes, with a maximum 20% content of one other grape variety. It matures at 3 years.

Montepulciano is a red grape variety grown in Central and South Italy. The grape should not be confused with a town in Italy called by the same name. Ironically, Montepulciano town does not plant this grape variety.
This grape variety turns ripe late which makes it not suitable for the colder regions in the northern part of Italy. It can become extremely green in colour if picked early. When it is fully ripe, it produces deep coloured wines, balanced acidity and high alcohol content.
This grape variety is utilised to produce Montepulciano d’Abbruzzo. This wine is produced in the Abruzzi region of Central Italy. Other names for the grape are Morellone, Cordisco, Uva Abbruzzi and Primaticcio.
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, is a flavourful red wine. It is best served in 60F temperature. The wine is best paired with dishes with red sauce.
This grape variety holds the distinction of being the second most widely grown in Italy next only to Sangiovese. In some of the red wines it is a required DOCs.
The grapes produce a huge number of yields during harvest. The fruit is plump with more juice than skin. The skin though has sufficient number of pigmented tannins and phenols which are responsible for its rich ruby colours, purple or pink wine particularly Cerasuolo.
The grape has less acidity and is milder than other Italian grape varieties. The wine produced is usually smooth, softer, more agreeable to the palate and can age well usually after three to four years. The wines are usually full bodied with spicy flavours and have milder, sweeter tannic taste. They can be paired with Italian dishes or rich cheeses. The younger wines are vibrant reds that can be consumed with or without food. The price is also very affordable. This varietal can produce good wine even in huge quantities.
