The Mourvedre is a red wine grape that is used primarily in blending. Its wines are characteristically deep in both color and flavor with cherry overtones and a musky, savory tone. Because of their high tannin content, these wines are often best consumed after six to eight years of aging.

Mourvedre is a grape variety utilised to produce dark red wines. This variety is grown in all parts of the globe. But is indigenous to Spain where it is referred to as Monastrell. In Spain, this wine ranked second to Grenache in importance.
The grape can produce wines that have high tannin content, high alcohol content and usually made using the Rhone method of blends. When combined with Grenache, the resulting wine is softer and has more structure. The flavour differs depending on the area it is grown but the earthy flavour mixed with red fruit appears consistent in most wines.
The wine is usually used in blends to enhance the color and tannic content of the wine. However, its flavour is usually neutral though. This is why this wine is used as part of the famous GSM blend composed of Grenache, Shiraz or Syrah, and Mourvedre. In early 1980s Australian winemakers came up with the GSM blend which is also becoming popular in California. Mourvedre makes the blend more elegant, have firmer structure and have higher acidity. It provides flavours of sweet plums and slight tobacco taste.
This grape variety ripens very late both in bud and fruit. It matures slowly and produces tight cluster of grapes that require ventilation to prevent rotting. It develops best in windy places such as Australia, Spain, Algeria and Southern France.

It can handle frosts from Spring but can wither due to the cold winter climate. It prefers warm climates but can be sensitive to droughts. It can survive even in windy locations.
