Order exclusive flowers online at serenata flowers. If you are looking for a truly special gift for a very important person, then ordinary blooms or floral arrangements simply will not do. These are moments when expense is not an issue and often the aim is to impress. For these once in a lifetime occasions or flower-giving emergencies, serenata flowers has the answer – order exclusive flowers online!

When Ordinary is Not Good Enough
You may be just an inch away from closing that multi-million deal, hosting a party with celebrities, or proposing marriage to the woman of your dreams. Whatever the reason, we all know that occasions like these call for extra special preparation. This is the reason why serenata flowers, the best online florist in the UK, took great pains in putting together bouquets of extra beautiful floral arrangements.

When you order exclusive flowers from serenata, you are assured of getting the freshest, most beautiful handpicked buds and blooms. They are mixed and arranged into different themes, such as “Narnian Dreams,” which is made up of exquisite flowers in different shades of white. This boquet of Pompeii lilies, avalanche roses and lisianthus is dotted with tiny snowdrops of gypsophila, drawing inspiration from the mythical world of Narnia from the novel written by C.S. Lewis.

If white is not your style, you can also try out the blues, pinks and purples from “All That Jazz” or “Perfect Pink.” When you order exclusive flowers from Serenata, you have the advantage of being able to choose the kind of blooms and buds that you think goes well with the recipient's character. There are arrangements that are hand-tied, accessorized with twigs, or carefully arranged in a vase for maximum effect.

You can also personalize the floral arrangements you purchase by adding extra items, such as a box of exquisite chocolate pralines and a bottle of Italian wine. These additional treats go well with any theme, and the selection of wines and chocolates from Serenata will be appreciated by even the most discriminating of palates. All these and more can be found when you order exclusive flowers at serenataflowers.com

Modern Flower Arrangements
For chic and modern floral arrangements, Serenata's “Pink lilies and Roses” would be the perfect choice. This hand-tied bouquet boasts aqua roses, oriental lilies, and blue thistles along with a handful of dried twigs. It is perfect for today's modern women, or as a dinner table centerpiece.

However, for the conservatives and romantics, Serenata recommends the classic pink and orange roses of “Love Story.” For a classic look, you will do well to choose “With All My Heart” – made up of white and light yellow blooms, which exude elegance and simplicity. This arrangement has avalanche roses, freesias, lilies, golden bupleurum, and eustomas.

Best of all, you can order exclusive flowers from Serenata at affordable prices. Just because you want extra special flowers to impress does not mean you have to spend a fortune on them. Log on to serenataflowers.com today to order exclusive flowers!

Let Unusual Flowers Symbolize Your Feelings

Since antiquity, flowers have been admired by men and women for their splendor, scent, and symbolism. In fact, flowers accompany our major events in life – birth and birthdays, engagement and marriage, holidays and celebrations, illnesses, and kiss-and-make-up. Indeed, even unusual flowers symbolize something.

Well, let serenata Flowers symbolize your feelings for your family and friends. You will find that even the most unusual flowers in the world will be presented in the most striking and symbolic way possible by the serenata florists. Just choose from among their wide assortment and find unusual flowers that you never thought could be included in a flower arrangement. Speaking of extraordinary flowers, on serenata, you can choose from blooms like white, pink, and green orchids as well as the exotic tulip-like curcumas.

Flowers by Occasion
At serenata flowers, you will not have to worry about the type of flowers to give on occasions when you want to create the right impression. You just have to determine what the occasion is, what you want to express with the blooms, and what the recipient’s preferences are. Then, you can hand in the reins to the serenata florists and let them do the work, even if you want a combination of unusual flowers! For example, the Eden bouquet is a combination of unusual flowers like avalanche roses and icy curcumas together with chrysanthemums and violet lisianthus, all nestled in chico jumbo leaves. It may be an unusual combination, yes, but the effect is very beguiling!

Flowers by Style
Did you know that in the world of blooms, what may be considered unusual flowers now may not be so unusual tomorrow? Of course, even when a flower is not so exotic anymore, it retains its sense of splendor and symbolism, not to mention scent. At Serenata Flowers, the florists definitely know their flowers so they can arrange them in many different ways! For example, who would have thought that unusual flowers like lilac liatris can be arranged in either modern or retro ways? Only at serenata!

Flowers by Variety
Well, of course, you might also want to give just a bouquet of the same flowers instead of a bunch of unusual flowers your recipient may not even know, least of all enjoy. At Serenata, you can actually purchase flowers by variety making your life easier. You can choose from different varieties of roses, lilies, sunflowers, curcumas, orchids, gerberas, peonies, and freesias, either in single arrangements or in bouquets. Did you know that sunflower stems were the original filler material for life jackets? Now, these are unusual flowers, if you ever saw one!

Flowers by Color
Flowers are much loved for their colors so it makes perfect sense for Serenata’s flowers to be classified according to color. Of course, you can give flowers based on your recipient’s flower and color preference. For example, if your girlfriend likes the color blue and roses, Serenata has the unusual Mass of Cool blue roses to excite and enchant. When coupled with a personalized note, you are truly set on a romantic evening! Indeed, usual and unusual flowers like curcumas, orchids, and sunflowers find a home at serenata flowers! Just let your imagination run free and your feelings flow, and then let the Serenata florists express them through flowers.

Admittedly, you can order fresh flowers from many online vendors aside from serenata flowers. However, when you order fresh flowers from serenata, you will get the following benefits that other online vendors cannot match, much less surpass.

As Fresh as Can Be
Serenata’s flowers are shipped directly from the Dutch auctions in the Netherlands to the company’s Heathrow Design Studio HQ. As such, you get only the freshest flowers from around the globe since there are no other stops along the way.

It is almost as if the flowers are picked off their stems and placed right into the hands of your special recipients! The special packaging ensures that freshness is maintained when your recipient receives her flowers.

As Cheap as Possible
Of course, even when the prices of Serenata’s fresh flowers are cheaper than their competitors, often by a substantial margin, the quality will never be compromised. Again, the secret lies in the direct-to-company process.

Since there are no middlemen involved, flower prices reflect only the reasonable profit of serenata. No middleman fees, no florist cuts, no dealer commissions are added. You just get fresh flowers at the most unbeatable prices in the United Kingdom!

Top Quality Handling and Packaging
With Serenata Flowers, your chosen fresh flowers are handled and packaged with the utmost care possible, even by post. After all, what good are flowers when they arrive wilted, wan, and wrinkly? No good at all!

Your flowers continue to receive nutrients and moisture even while in transit, thanks to the drip-free cellophane bubble of florists’ gel into which each stem is placed. The whole bouquet is then placed in a card box with appropriate filler materials and card support. Your gift recipient then receives fresh flowers that look, smell, and feel newly-picked, even after a day’s journey.

If your recipient lives overseas, and you still want Serenata’s fresh flowers as gifts, there are local florist partners that will do the job for you. Of course, the assurance of quality stays because it is the way business is done at serenata!

Personalized Flowers and Messages
Where other online florists only offer standardized flower arrangements and cards, Serenata fresh flowers can be personalized any way you want. Well at least within reasonable terms.

For example, you can add a personal flower favorite in a bouquet filled with your recipient’s favorite fresh flowers so you can inject a sense of unique personality into an otherwise standard arrangement. Even your message can be personalized on high-quality paper to reflect how you truly, deeply, and madly feel about your special someone!

Also, you can choose from among a wide variety of vases! Why go for the usual flowers-in-a-ribbon arrangement when you can accent it with just the right vase? You will also be prolonging the life of the fresh flowers.

Truly, when it comes to fresh flowers, nothing explains your feelings like fresh flowers from Serenata. They are as fresh as can be and as inexpensive as possible, handled and packaged elegantly and securely, as well as with personalized options.

Just log on to the Serenata Flowers’ website and impress a friend. You will make someone happy with fresh flowers, and you will be happy as well!

An England Florist Dream

It does not matter whether you are planning a wedding, a birthday, a family reunion, or any social event you can think of. flowers will always be needed to add life to the gathering and turn the conventional gathering hall into something more magical.

But if you are like most of the people who have tried ordering flowers from flower shops, I am sure you have found yourself one to many times disappointed with the output: flowers going dry or not yet blooming, or sometimes just simply not right for the occasion or blooms that are not attractive enough. However, the solution to this problem is rather simple; do not just go out and buy from the first England florist you see, try serenata Flowers and you will never find your flowers lacking luster.

Why are Serenata’s flowers better than those of all the other England florists in the market? Firstly, they guarantee impact. It is one thing to put flowers in the hallways of your living room, but it is an entirely different matter for them to be the only things that your guests will remember – in a good way. This is because they are groomed from the finest suppliers all over the country and are groomed well and fashioned to a perfection that makes them completely unforgettable.

A common problem people experience with flowers when bought from shops and other England florists in the market is that they usually go dry or wilt after just a few hours of exposure. Since most flowers have already had a long stay in the florist's shop, they usually die out fast. With flowers from Serenata though, the blossoms are treated like VIPs in their air-conditioned transport and stem baths. This ensures you that your flowers are in their freshest possible condition when they arrive at your doorstep.

I am sure most of us have been dismayed by some hideous flower arrangements created by some england florist shops. They hardly look like decorative flowers; they seem more like abstract art without a canvas. It is a good thing that every Serenata flower bouquet is created by an in-house team of floral artists brimming with inspiration. They monitor each and every arrangement and see to it that your satisfaction is guaranteed.

In case you are wondering about delivery, they are delivered right where you want them at the exact time you want them. They use only the most reliable delivery service imaginable for your flowers. You should also remember that they use fully air-conditioned vehicles to transport your beautiful decoration pieces. Not all England florist shops are capable of doing this for your flowers.

Additionally, they assure you of the quality of the flowers they offer you. They will only get the best and hottest flowers imaginable just for you. Just in case one flower that is less than satisfactory gets jumbled in the mix, then they will offer a full refund or replacement for the trouble. You cannot beat an offer like that!

Our auction house talent scouts are masters at spotting the hottest flowers on the floral catwalks. Every now and again though, a charlatan gets through –a flower that looked terrific that night, but that just cannot go the distance. If any of these blooms end up in your bouquet, we promise to make up for our sins by offering you a replacement or full refund.

So if you ever find yourself in need of some flower arrangements for any event you can think of, at any venue, at any time, then serenata flowers is the best you can choose. Serenata’s flowers are the dream flowers of any England florist shops and will certainly be the dream flower set for you.

Colour Theory: Send Roses with Meaning

Many people today are interested in color theory. Whether choosing what color to paint walls, or deciding what color roses to send, knowing the meaning of the colors can be important. When you are looking at rose colors, and trying to pick out the best roses for the occasion, knowing the meanings of the colors can be a huge help.

If you are sending a bouquet to a significant other, many opt for all red roses. We all know that red roses are a sign of love and passion. Red roses are touted as one of the most romantic gestures one person can make to another. Depending on the specific message you are trying to send, you may want to consider adding some other colors into the bouquet. For example, a pink rose is generally seen as less impressive than a red rose, but in reality it just sends a more gentle message. A pink rose symbolizes a calmer part of romance. It shows sweetness, as well as admiration. If you are trying to tell the one you love that, not only do you love them, but you admire them as well, adding in a few pink roses should do the trick. White roses can lean toward romance as well, but in a more serious way. Many times, white roses are used for wedding bouquets. The reason for this is that, as with a white wedding dress, they are supposed to mean purity and innocence.

White roses also have another meaning. They are frequently used in condolence bouquets, because they can show remembrance and honor. Along with white roses, occasionally very light pink roses are used in these bouquets. Light pink roses are said to show sympathy.

If you are sending a congratulatory bouquet, you may want to consider a combination of yellow and orange roses. Orange roses show excitement and enthusiasm, which are great for congratulations. Roses that are yellow show happiness and friendship. Combining the two makes for a great message to a friend or loved one.

Today, there are many types of roses that do not necessarily fit in the traditional colors. For example, there are "candy stripe" roses that combine white and pink in the same flower. If you are wondering the meaning of these roses, you would just combine the meaning of the pink and the white. So, a "candy stripe" rose can mean a pure or sweet romance.

No matter what message you are trying to send, you can find the right combination with beautiful roses.

If you are wondering about the quality of the flower arrangements, then do not worry. No flowers in the United Kingdom will be as magnificent and stunning as those made by serenata flowers. They employ a team of highly skilled and imaginative floral artists who will arrange, cut, and design your ordered bouquet for you. They will arrange the already stunning flowers into something that is breathtaking. You do not have to worry about their team’s discretion because they have never been wrong.

Nothing is more of a turn off than rude customer service care. It is a good thing that Serenata Flowers also excels in that department. They actually go out of their way to make sure that you do not have any problems when ordering, and they will try to make the experience as fun as possible. They are so good at it that they won an award from DTI because of it.

The flowers in shops in the United Kingdom usually wilt or dry up by the time they arrive at your doorstep. Serenata Flowers uses the best possible delivery system around, which is why their bouquets will always arrive on time at your doorstep. Also, remember that they use air-conditioned vehicles when transporting these stunning blooms.

While flowers in the UK’s flower shops are good, it just so happens that Serenata’s flowers are better in almost every aspect. If you ever need flowers for any occasion or simply want some fresh flowers in a vase, do not hesitate to call and order one.

For the aesthete, there's almost nothing worse than seeing a nubile young beauty in ill-suited couture.  Nothing, except perhaps a bouquet of flowers in a mismatched vase. The horror indeed!

How to make your Valentines Day flowers last longer

Your knees have stopped quivering, your cheeks are a most becoming blush instead of that embarrassing bright red, the oohing and aahing crowds in the office have all gone back to their desks and your pulse rate has dropped back below 100 beats per minute. Oh well, the thrill of getting flowers had to come to an end sometime... or perhaps not.

Taking care of your flowers properly is a great excuse to prolong the buzz and show off your blossoms by asking jealous secretaries and the like for things such as scissors to snip your flower stems, vases, you know, to keep those flowers you got looking gorgeous and, um, well, water, oh, to keep those flowers someone sent you feeling perky.

Valentine's Day - 14 February

Top tips on caring for your Valentine flowers

How do you feel when you arrive somewhere after a journey? Chances are your flowers feel much the same. Welcome them to their new environment by following these simple steps.

  1. In the same way as you like to take off your coat and put down your bag, your flowers want to get rid of any excess baggage. Remove the protective aqua packaging over a sink, but leave on any strings tied around the stems - these holds the flowers in place and don't discomfort them in the slightest.
  2. While relaxation is important, you need to keep your flowers on their toes. Lay the bouquet on its side and cut about 3cm off the stems, ensuring you make the incision at a 45-degree angle.
  3. Drinks and snacks all round! Empty the sachet of plant food into a clean, wide-necked vase and fill it with water. Not ice cold water, mind you. Water is the red wine of the flower world: best served at room temperature.
  4. Lower the bouquet into the vase and then settle your guests somewhere they'll feel welcome - away from fruit, radiators, bright light and drafts, and somewhere you'll enjoy their company and remember to take care of them.

Play the perfect host by changing the water every few days. In warm or dry environments, you can also mist your bouquet every morning. Feel free to talk to your flowers, but be careful not to cause unease to other guests who may be visiting.

Taking your flowers home with you from work?
It's perfectly safe to leave them in their florists gel packaging for a few hours. Keep them upright in a temperate room, and just remember that, like you, they'll be keen for a nice long drink after a hard day in the office.

Wedding Flower Trends for 2010

Wedding flowers in 2010 show that brides are budget conscious. The floral industry makes up for this with new ideas for arrangements that are inexpensive, yet beautiful. The arrangements focus on simplicity, but with colorful details.

This year the focus is on the details. Faux crystal pieces add glitter to a bouquet. Stems wrapped in ribbon with pearl pin details can finish off the bouquet. Simple white star of Bethlehem flowers can have the addition of crystals in the center.

The details can also be the starting point or inspiration. A floral arrangement with peacock feather accents can include deep purple blossoms with exposed green stems. Feather accents, even in white, are a popular motif for bridal bouquets.

Fruit and vegetable additions are popular in both centerpieces and bouquets. This detail can highlight a neutral flower, such as a white rose. You could add orange slices lining a glass vase or an artichoke that's part of a bouquet.

There is also an increase of exotic flowers for weddings in 2010. These flowers are popular for more casual or outdoor weddings. An anemone features an open blossom with black and white tones so it will work with almost any color palette. Other flowers that are common in everyday arrangements are making the move to the big day. These include Gerber daises, and even bouquets made entirely from baby's breath. Show off the dramatic colors or shapes of an unusual flower choice by just sticking with one type of blossom.

Multiple centerpieces have become all the rage. This idea uses smaller bouquets in groupings or to line the table. If you can't decide on one arrangement, pick all of the ones you like. As long as the color palette or type of flower is cohesive from vase to vase you can explore with different design options.

There has been a trend focusing on one stem of a more expensive flower, such as an orchid. This deserves special treatment to turn it into a centerpiece. Submersed or underwater flowers are a new way to arrange wedding decor. This look just requires decorative rocks or marbles, flowers, water, and a clear tall vase. You can group several vases together, all with different heights of flowers inside.

Vases are becoming more important, with colorful retro versions of glass. If you're using a more expensive flower and you can only afford a few blossoms, then change up the vase. Try an oversized version that still has a small neck for some style.

Get your business blooming

Start-ups hoping to avoid the crash and burn that comes from burning cash too freely in the heady first months have been offered some hot tips from publishing tycoon Felix Dennis.

Along with indispensible advice about overheads and underindulging, the entrepreneur suggested that 'a vase of beautiful flowers in reception every week creates a better impression than £100,000 worth of fancy Italian furniture'. We couldn't agree more.

UK heatwave - not all the flowers are suffering

A new and rather undesirable floral trend has emerged across England this week. Petals are wilting, stems bending, leaves drooping - adding sweat to the already sweltering brows of flower lovers. But the heat has not proved bad news for everyone:

The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew has reported the first flowering of Clematis zemuensis for over 25 years.

It could be that conditions here now are as they would be in the Himalayas where this plant comes from, said a spokesman.

Clematis zemuensis
Clematis zemuensis (Photograph by RBG Kew)

Since it is rather unlikely any of your floral arrangements will be enjoying the weather as much as Clematis zemuensis is, try these simple tricks to keep your flowers fresh in the heat:

  • Cut about 3cm off each flower stem at a 45-degree angle, using a very sharp knife - the angle increases water absorbing surface area and a clean slice ensures none of the waterways become blocked
  • Change the water often - not only do flowers drink more in the hot weather, but bacteria breed far more quickly
  • Keep the flowers out of direct sunlight - they are just like us, really.

If you are going to send flowers to someone in a hot place, try and pick sturdier, tropical varieties that are accustomed to hot climates. From the serenata range, we recommend Curcuma Sensation, Twist and Shout  and Tropical Cascade for longevity. Lilies are also good at keeping their cool when it is summer in the city.

7 Fascinating Facts About Roses

A rose can say so much, and yet most people can’t say anything at all about a rose. Although everyone loves getting them, not many people know the long or detailed history of roses. While understanding roses is not necessary to appreciate their beauty, it certainly helps to appreciate their existence.

1. Roses Are Old

It just needs a little water.
Roses have been around for a long, loooong time. While it is hard to say exactly how long, there are some benchmarks in history to help to date the existence of the rose.
Theophrastus, known as the father of modern botany, wrote of a hundred-petaled rose 300 years before the birth of Christ. A rose is featured in a Greek palace as part of a painted mural created in 1450 BC. However, the most impressive evidence so far? In Florissant, Colorado, a fossilized imprint of a rose was found estimated to be 35 million years old. While there is no evidence suggesting when exactly roses came to be, they may be giving the phrase “old as dirt” a run for its money.

2. Roses Have Been in Space

This chess set cost 9 million dollars. A mission to replace a missing pawn is set for next month.
In what can only be described as further proof the American space program has too much time and money on its hands, International Flavors and Fragrances Inc., in conjunction with NASA, sent a rose into space into 2002. One of the goals of the mission was to measure how low-gravity would influence the smell of a rose.
While space exploration has yielded some of mankind’s greatest accomplishments, exploring things IN space just seems like killing time and budget that could be spent sending a man to Mars. Although I’m sure the results were very fascinating, there is no practical use for knowing how to space-proof a rose’s scent.

3. Rose Colors Have Special Meanings

Blue roses are symbolic of sexual droughts.
While roses come in a variety of colors, it is important to know the symbolism behind each one. Without this knowledge, a friendship rose can easily be misinterpreted as a passion rose, and a trip to the movies could accidentally turn into a night in a hotel room.
White roses symbolize perfection, innocence and virginity (which doesn’t stop most people from using them at their weddings anyway). Pink and yellow roses represent friendship, while red roses represent love. Green roses are environmentally friendly, gray roses represent uncertainty, and scarlet roses are whores.

4. Many Roses Are Named After Celebrities

George Burns’ rose is far less funny, but way more alive.
While many celebrities have different standards for measuring success, be it by yearly salary or awards won or number of DUI’s successfully plea-bargained, one standard that seems to be particularly unique is having a namesake rose. Those in this club are a distinguished (though somewhat eclectic) group.
From Abraham Lincoln and JFK to Barbara Streisand and Reba McEntire, the prerequisites for having a rose named after you seem to be inconsistent at best. There are a number of fictional celebrities on the list as well, as Betty Boop, Robin Hood and Snow White have all received the honor. Susan Lucci does not have a rose named after her, but it’s worth noting that she has been nominated by fans a record 400 times.

5. Roses Can Be Big

Many of the poles are load-bearing.
Standard bouquets of roses are a thoughtful gift that can be given to anyone at anytime. However some individual roses are bigger than even the gaudiest bouquets, and some bushes are bigger than most houses.
The largest single rose ever bred has a diameter of 33 inches across. It was a pink rose bred in California by Nikita Rulhoksoffski. However that single rose pales in comparison to the size of the rosebush in Tombstone, Arizona that spreads an arbor covering over 8,000 square feet. Roses may be a small gesture of love and kindness, but they can grow to be relatively huge in size.

6. The Rose is Patriotic

Ronald Reagan, Nancy Reagan, the Rose Commission, and Miss America, October 1986.
Many people know their own official state flower, but not many people know that the rose is the official National Floral Emblem of the United States of America. Those who do know this fact may be surprised to learn that unlike the rose, the rose’s national status is relatively new.
Ronald Reagan declared the rose to be the National Floral Emblem in 1986. While many states also use the rose as their state flower, the rose is the only flower given the national honor. Chosen for its beauty, simplicity, patriotism, and a number of generous campaign contributions in 1984, the rose remains the national flower of the USA.

7. Roses Are Edible

Available in “small” and “slightly smaller.”
Roses are the perfect gift for anyone looking to say, “I love you.” However, few people know they are also the perfect snack for those looking to say, “I trust you (won’t die by eating this).”
Rose hips are in fact a relatively common ingredient in many recipes for things like pudding, jelly, candy, and schnapps. Their sweet fragrance translates well as an accent flavor for these foods, and while it sounds unappetizing, the flower petals themselves can be safely ingested. While it is still a better idea to take a woman out to dinner, it is nice to know that the flowers you bring her could double as the hors d’oeuvres.

Conclusion:
Even though the rose is one of the most popular flowers in existence, it is remarkable how little most people know about it. Though the rose’s appearance makes it beautiful, its history, symbolism, and usefulness makes it interesting, and ultimately that is why it has endured for centuries as the top flower in the garden. (That, and because they are easy for men to order.)

Say What You Feel With The Color Of Flowers

If you've decided to give flowers as a gift then you've probably got something that you wish to say to the person. While a card or letter might convey what you truly mean, the color of the flowers that you give can also say what you are feeling. You certainly don't want to walk up to someone on your first date and hand them a flower that says "I just want to be friends."

So before you buy a friend or your first date a bouquet of flowers based off their favorite color, it's a good idea to research what the colors of the flowers mean.

The following is a guide to knowing what the different colors of the flowers symbolize and what type of situations would be fitting to give them to people in.

Red. Red is the most noticeable color for flowers. There are red roses and red carnations. Red is all over when it comes to flowers. Red symbolizes the feelings of passion and love and are best reserved for dates, romance or weddings.

Yellow. Wearing yellow can sometimes symbolize a feeling of being a coward, but when it comes to flowers yellow takes on a whole new meaning. Yellow flowers represent friendship and joy. Most yellow flowers are given to friends on friendship day or as a make up gift after a fight. The yellow color gives off vibes of happiness and joy.

Pink. When you wish to express grace, happiness and joy, pink flowers might be the best way to go. Pink is given at a lot recitals to express happiness for the performer or even right after an exam or test to express how joyful the person is that the test is over with.

White. White lilies, carnations and roses are most symbolic of sympathy or compassion. These white flowers are usually found in sympathy baskets or flower arrangements. White flowers also represent innocence, but are more commonly used to express sympathy over a loss of a loved one.

Black. Not many flowers come originally in the color black. The most famous flower that is known to be in black is that of the black rose. It symbolizes a person's obsession and in most cases has been known to be left in cases of stalking. Recently the black rose has taken on a gothic meaning and many people have used it for wedding floral arrangements to add a bit of gothic flare to the wedding.

Caring for Houseplants

Feeding a plant can sometimes be challenging when first starting out. Knowing whether plain fertilizer will be enough for your plant or whether you need a special feed is important. If a plant does not have the necessary nutrients, they will not flourish. Foliage plants must be high in nitrogen, but flowering plants need to be high in K2O for optimum health. Not every fertilizer is created equal, so make sure you know exactly what your plant needs.

Lighting is important when raising plants. Some plants require a lot of light and others do not require much light. There are plants that require no shade; some plants that need a little bit of sun every day, and some plants that have to have as much sunlight as possible. Ask an experienced florist and they will be able to tell you how much light your new plant will need.

Humidity is another important part of raising houseplants. Some plants require the environment to be humid, and it can be challenging to keep up. A way to create a humid environment for your plant is to place the potted plant into a larger pot. Then you can fill the voided area with compost or stones to help lock in the moisture. If you are new to planting or are raising a new kind of plant, you should know what to do. Talking to a florist or researching online will give you all the knowledge you need to keep houseplants healthy.

7 Weirdest Things People Feed to Plants.

Aside from water, not many people know exactly what to feed their plants (in fact, a surprising number don’t even have water on their list). While there are many store bought fertilizers and plant foods available, there are plenty of less-mainstream, more-weird options that have also been proven to keep plants alive. The following are just some of the weirdest things people feed to plants.

5 o’clock shadow or HAIR TRIGGERS OF DEATH?!

Although feeding a bucket of flies to a rose bush won’t do a ton of good, feeding them to a Venus flytrap is the only way to keep it alive.

The Venus flytrap has tiny hair triggers on its surface that allows it to snap shut when contacted by any outside prey. Although it is not the only carnivorous plant, it is certainly the most popular. Fans of musical theatre know this fact well, as a musical about an oversized, man-eating plant is one of the most popular shows of all-time (Oklahoma by Rogers and Hammerstein).

Dr. Earth did not go to medical school.

An excellent source of slow-released phosphorous and calcium, bone meal was once used as a calcium supplement for humans. That was before it was discovered to be contaminated with lead, full of toxic metals, and the primary cause of Mad Cow Disease.

Since plants are neither cows nor people, bone meal still serves an excellent fertilizer for phosphorous-hungry plants. Although it seems counterintuitive to serve what was once meat to what could be salad, it is all part of the circle of life.

Volcanic ash is not as beneficial. Also it is much harder to come by.

For proponents of cremation, nothing serves as an ideal plant food better than the charred remains of other plants. While ashes from firewood may seem like garbage, they can easily be reused as a cheap and effective plant food.

Because wood ashes have a high alkalinity, they can be incredibly beneficial to plants such as hydrangeas, lilacs, and roses. These ashes also contain small amounts of calcium and potassium, which encourage blooming. It’s like the old saying goes, “when your soil needs alkalinity, throw some wood ash on it.”

These two have been missing since 2003. While there are no leads, the soil outside of the Wiggles’ house seems to be exceptionally rich…

Because bananas are high in potassium, they are an excellent source of potassium. Why not exploit this abundance of potassium by making a potassium-rich plant food from old banana peels? Potassium!

Potassium is vital in plant nutrition. Because banana peels biodegrade, they can easily be added to soil in order to boost the overall health of plants. By mixing banana peels in with new soil or drying and grinding the peels into a spread, you can ensure that your plants are full, rich, and delicious with peanut butter.

After you’re done with your reading.

Tea is high in nutrients and tannic acid, so it is particularly nourishing for plants. Not only that, but well placed tealeaves can be the fertilizer that keeps on fertilizing.

While brewed tea can be poured directly into the soil, giving your garden a very potent shot of nutrients, un-brewed tealeaves can also be used, providing a slower, steadier drip of plant love. By putting tealeaves around plants just below the soil surface, new tea is brewed each time the plants are watered.  No matter which deliver method you choose, using tea as a fertilizer will make your plants healthier, taller, and slightly more British.

Don’t plant the paper.

While ashes are perfect for alkaline loving plants, coffee grounds are perfect for acidic-loving plants. For those plants needing a spicier taste, coffee is the new ash.

Azaleas, evergreens, and rhododendrons are just some of the plants that thrive on acidic soil. Since coffee grounds are thrown out after one use (two if you’re a broke college student), it is an easy way to reuse your waste. It is also an easy way to ensure your flowers stay awake during road trips and business lectures.

None of these people have any idea about SCD.

Technically, Sub Coca Dragon was a plant food first before becoming a club drug, but the sentiment is the same. For those looking to spruce up their plant life, or throw a rave in their garden, Sub Coca Dragon is for you.

A cousin to cocaine, SCD has been marketed for years as a plant food. Thanks to a little ingenuity and a large willingness to put anything in their body that might get them high, teens overseas have discovered that SCD also doubles as a club drug. While the use of SCD for anything other than fertilizer is dangerous and stupid, it is said to be somewhat effective in aiding plant growth. This effectiveness is enhanced tremendously with large amounts of water and some glow sticks.

Conclusion:

Although some of the most bizarre items can be fed to plants, it is important to remember that most things that come from nature can be sent back into nature. Biodegradable items like coffee grounds, tea leaves, and synthetic drugs can all serve the soil well. Whether you have a green thumb or are just trying not to kill your houseplants, the addition of some of these weird plant foods could make all the difference.

Options for Unique Delivery Gifts.

There are a lot of different gifts that you can send through a delivery service other than just flowers. These are appropriate for a lot of different age ranges, price points, genders, and occasions. It’s also a very quick way to find presents that will impress.

Hampers and Baskets

Gift baskets and hampers allow you to send a variety of different food. These gifts usually incorporate a theme like cheese or fruit. This could even be a chocolate extravaganza full of different cookies, cocoa, and truffles. You can still send a traditional gift like chocolate for Valentine's Day, but make it a little bit different with the presentation. For adults you can choose a bottle of wine paired with cheese.

Consider a hamper to congratulate new parents. The recipients can use it for a quick snack so it's more practical than flowers. You'll want to consider one of these items when the recipient is getting a lot of floral arrangements at one time, such as a hospital stay. If you send a traditional fruit basket then change it up by including a bottle of sparkling cider.

Plants

Outdoor plants are going to last a lot longer than flowers. Plants can even be a commemorative piece after the loss of a loved one. You might find that it's more expensive than just sending a bouquet. Have several neighbors or family members chip in. You can even include a pot or planter for an added cost. In this case, go for a classic olive tree, Japanese maple, or Laurus Nobilis Bay tree.

Plant gifts can also be fun. Buxus topiaries can be elegant if you go with a spiral design, but you can also get unusual shapes. You can have a wire frame, pot, and plant delivered. This could be in the shape of an animal or other interesting shape. The recipient can trim the topiary to retain the shape.

You can combine the idea of sending a fruit basket and plants together. Depending on your climate, you can order a miniature citrus tree. This could be a lemon, lime, or orange. It can even grow on a windowsill.

Gift Sets

Gift basket sets don't have to include food. They can just be an arrangement of gifts like baby socks, clothes, and rattles. The packaging will be impressive and you won't have to shop for all of the smaller items separately. You can also send these products for occasions that you might miss, such as a baby shower.

Innocent Daisies

Daisies have the ability to bring a little bit of sunshine as they brighten up a room or put a smile on someone’s face. Daisies symbolize innocence and loyal love. In fact, the first thing people think about when they see the flower is the childhood “he loves me, he loves me not” game every women has played. Throughout history, the daisy has been associated with innocence just as it is today.

According to ancient Roman mythology, the origin of the daisy comes from a story about the god of the gardens, Vertumnus, who had an eye for lovely women. Vertumnus fell in love with a wood nymph named Belides, but she was not in love with him. In order to protect herself, Belides turned herself into a daisy, scientifically known as a bellis flower. During the age of the Celtics, daisies also represented innocence. The Celtics believed that the spirit of a child that died during birth would produce a daisy for the grieving parents. As the daisy would grow, the parent’s grief would lighten.

Daisies also have their place in religion. One Christian legend states that the wise men looked for a sign as to which stable baby Jesus was in and found daisies next to the stable. Daisies also looked like the star of Bethlehem that led the wise men to Jesus. Another Christian legend says that the flower grew from where the Virgin Mary’s tears landed during the crucifixion of Jesus. If you look at artwork from the medieval era, you will see daisies as a symbol of Christ as a child and his innocence.

The Victorians also had an affection for daisies, which is when the “He loves me, he loves me not” game came to be. Today young girls still play the daisy game and we still associate daisies with innocence, love, and purity. Daisies are the perfect gift for many different occasions. Daisies come in a variety of colors and each color has a different meaning. The traditional white daisy symbolizes the innocence and purity we all associate with the flower and can be given to a friend to brighten up his or her day. Red daisies should be given on occasions where there is reason to be joyful like a birthday celebration or a new promotion. Yellow daisies can be given as an apology because it symbolizes the desire to earn love from the recipient.

Discover the Meaning Behind the Flower.

Most people know that certain flowers belong to specific occasions, but they do not realize the meaning behind most flowers. Flowers help mark the most important events in our lives such as birthdays, graduation, funerals, weddings, and more. A flower can also be significant for religious purposes as well. It can be impossible for anyone to be completely unaware of the meaning behind certain flowers, such as red roses signifying romance and yellow roses signify friendship.

Aside from roses, most people do not consider the meaning of the flower before giving them as a gift, but those receiving the flowers probably do not know the meaning either. Calla Lilies are known for their beauty, but they represent magnificence. White Calla Lilies represent innocence and purity, which is why they are so popular for weddings. Carnation flowers represent beauty and pride. Like the rose, the colors of a carnation symbolize more than just beauty, which is what makes them appropriate to give to someone being honored.

Daffodils represent chivalry, which is specified in rebirth and eternal life. One daffodil foretells hardship, but a bouquet indicates happiness and joy. A daisy represents purity and innocence. The flower communicates love and loyalty to the one it is given. Gardenia flowers represent sweetness and purity. Sometimes the flower is given as a way to share a secret love, express joy, or enhance feelings of mystery.

Lilac flowers represent confidence and youthful virtue. A white lilac is representative of charity and giving. Many white lilacs are present at charity fundraisers or events. Lily flowers symbolize refined beauty and purity. Oriental in origin, the colors of a Lily can mean different things. Religious significance of an Easter lily represents the Virgin Mary. An Orchid flower is exotic and represents refinement and maturity. An Orchid is also a way to celebrate and be proud of femininity.

The bright Sunflower signifies dedication and adoration, but the flower can also signify arrogance. The Tulip flower represents a declaration of adoration. It can represent perfect love and fame. No matter the occasion, flowers are always a good accessory, but you need to know which one is right for the moment. You do not want to have flowers that represent the opposite of what you are trying to accomplish because it will change the natural mood of the event. If you want a certain flower because of the way it looks, do some research to make sure it works for your event.

How to Send Flowers for Less.

Sending flowers is an easy way to give a gift or just show that you are thinking of someone. You can get arrangements at all different price points. The recipient doesn't have to know that you were on a budget if you follow these tips.

Stick with simple arrangements. A dozen red roses is a classic gift. This makes it easy to find and quite inexpensive. You can always just change up the color of rose that you send if you just want to make your arrangement unique. Look for a variety of tones of white and pink for a feminine bouquet. If you're really on a budget then just send a single rose in a bud vase to show that you remember an anniversary or holiday.

Explore inexpensive floral arrangements. Mums can be a cheerful flower that blends well with country decor. The flowers also come in a varity of pastel colors. Daisies are also budget friendly. Gerbera daisies come in bright pinks, purples, and yellows.

Plan ahead. Delivery costs will go up depending on how far in advance you order the items. It will also depend on the time of day that the recipient is home. Some arrangements might require that you buy a vase separately. If you've already sent the recipient flowers in the past then they might be able to reuse a glass vase.

Choose an entire bouquet. Bouquets can use several flowers and even different types of leaves and greenery. This gives you an opulent look on a budget. The flowers will usually be in the same color palette but each blossom will have a different price point. You can still give calla lilies on a budget. These flowers can make a bold impact so an arrangement might just need a few of these mixed in with a lot of greenery.

Make a statement with color. If you want to get a big impact on a budget then embrace vibrant colors. You can get orange or yellow lilies that will be different than the typical rose bouquet. You can also combine unusual palettes. such as lilies with irises. This is such a bold choice that you might be able to get away with fewer flowers thus cutting down on costs.

Baby's breath has been a staple to fill out arrangements and cut costs but there are a lot of different options out there. You could get a tropical feeling with phoenix palm leaves. Daisy mums are also a budget friendly filler option.

Why You Should Send Silk Flowers.

There are several advantages to sending silk flowers. It can be one of the few options available if the recipient has allergies. Faux flowers have come a long ways in the last few years. Now they look quite convincing and there's a lot of options to choose from.

Consider the Variety that's Available to You

Some flowers, like orchids, could be expensive. Certain blossoms might not be available in your area, such as bougainvillea. Plus, you can match your home decor exactly by going with purple roses. You can experiment with different colors than what you'd find in nature. If you want a natural look, then find bouquets with both open blossoms as well as buds. The shading and texture of the leaves is also important. Since this is going to become a part of the recipient's home decor consider more neutral gifts. This could just be a large oversized faux fern. Whoever receives it won't even need a green thumb.

Silk Flowers are Durable

This is going to be an arrangement that your friends and family can keep for years. It can serve as a reminder of a special event, such as a birth. You do need to give it an air of importance though. Send it through a traditional floral delivery service and include a vase. You can also add in chocolates, teddy bears, or balloons. If you want to send a get well present this is a great alternative. Some sections of the hospital won’t allow flowers for the patients’ health, but you can work around this with silk flowers.

Cutting Down On Costs

You can save a lot of money when you go this route. You can spend your savings on a high quality vase or speedier delivery. If you don't think gift giving is in your budget then just rethink the presents you choose. If you want to send calla lilies or a large arrangement the price can escalate when using real flowers. Going with silk flowers helps you cut down on costs while giving a lasting gift.

There are a few things that you can look for to make silk flowers look more realistic. The stems are some of the most important factors. If the arrangement just comes in bunches then look for an opaque or painted pot. If you spend the money on more convincing stems then really show it off with a clear vase. You can add pebbles and stones to stabilize the arrangement. Moss can cover up the lack of soil in faux potted plants.

How to Choose the Perfect Flowers for the Season

Seasonal flowers are a chance to really add to your home decor. They are a great way to commemorate the holidays and even send an unexpected Thanksgiving or Halloween present. Try out a few of these ideas to get floral deliveries that fit within the season.

Stay in the traditional color palette but change up the type of blossom. For fall this could mean going with aurulent chrysanthemums, goldenrods, or rosehips. This brings in basic yellows, reds, and orange for fall while using flowers that most people haven't seen before.

Pay special attention to the arrangement. You might just want to go with one type of flower in different colors. This is going to give you more of a contemporary feeling. Make sure that it has an oversized vase or tropical blossoms so that it’s different than the arrangement you bought last year.

You need to ensure that your vase matches the overall feeling of the season. For winter this might be a gray porcelain version. For fall find pieces that have warm tones such as a faux wood or bamboo. The traditional glass vase is perfect for the light and airy summer and spring months. White porcelain versions would work for this occasion as well.

Play around with roses. For the winter months, red and white roses are appropriate. In autumn you can stick with yellow or orange. You can also try Cherry Brandy roses. This rose has both orange and yellow that blend together in one blossom. Spring and summer call for more pastel colors such as pink or lavender.

Tropical flowers make a big statement while using daring colors. You can find Birds of Paradise that bring in warmer tones for fall. It will definitely be different than the typical Thanksgiving centerpiece.

Stick with the classics. Each season has different flowers associated with it. For fall you might think of sunflowers. You can also get gerbera daisies for the same effect. These flowers will also come in burgundy as well as the typical yellow.

Go for a modern effect. This is the perfect way to just change up a traditional floral arrangement. You can do this just with a square vase or a low cube. This also adds a lot of interest to smaller arrangements. It's important because fake flowers tend to be a holiday staple and you might use the same one year after year. When you get a fresh bouquet you really should ensure that it stands out.

The Rich Mans Flower - Orchids.

Though many people think of orchids as potted plants, or even something to plant in the greenhouse, this is not always the case. In fact, they can make a beautiful part of an amazing floral arrangement. There are some arrangements that are purely orchids, while many times the orchid is used in conjunction with other plants and flowers, as well.

Orchids have originated throughout the world. From China and the West Indies to the Aztecs in what is now south America, these gorgeous flowers have a very exotic feel to them. Orchids have been used for many purposes throughout time. At many points, in different cultures, they have been used for medicinal purposes. They are also the source of the flavoring for vanilla. Not only that, but they have also long been used as a decorative plant. In the 19th Century, there was a bit of an orchid craze, and they became extremely popular and also expensive. All of the wealthy had to have orchids. Because of this, orchids have since been known as a plant for the rich, though this is not always the case any longer.

Today, orchids symbolize beauty, luxury, and opulence. In many Asian cultures, these flowers still symbolize royalty and riches. Once they also symbolized fertility. In fact, in ancient Greece, these gorgeous flowers were said to help a couple decide the gender of their child before it was born. To choose the gender, the mother or the father of the child would eat varying size petals of the orchid. Most frequently, orchids are used in bouquets that show congratulations and excitement. For example, if a friend is having a baby, you may want to consider giving them a bouquet with orchids in it. This will show your happiness and well meaning. Because of the exotic nature of these flowers, and the bright colors that they usually come in, they are not generally used in funeral arrangements. They will occasionally be used in sympathy bouquets to add a touch of happiness for the future.

Orchids come in a variety of colors, ranging from pure white petals with a yellow or orange center, to bright pinks, reds, yellows, and more. There are even varieties of the flower that have a green tint, with a pink or red center. If you are looking for something unique and exotic, an orchid can give just the right amount of flair to your next floral gift.

Rich History and Rich Colors - Lilies

Lilies are a very diverse type of flower. There are so many different varieties of the flower, and many different colors that they come in. Not only that, the lily has a rich history in our world. They were originally the flowers that worshipers of Hera, who was the wife of the god Zeus, dedicated to the goddess. Legend has it that when Hera first breastfed Hercules, a few drops of the milk made its way to earth. These droplets formed the very first lilies of the world. There have been instances of the lily being discovered in architecture and art work as far back as 1500 BC.

Originally, lilies symbolized death. Today, though, different strains of lilies symbolize different things. For example, frequently white Calla Lilies are used in weddings, because of their symbolization for purity, beauty, and love. Many people still see lilies, especially varieties of darker colors, as a symbol of sympathy or death. This is why these flowers are not only frequently used in wedding arrangements, but also in funeral and sympathy arrangements. Beyond this, the lily is the flower for the second marriage anniversary. Because there is such a variety of types of lilies, there has also come to be a variety of meanings associated with the flower.

Some of the brighter, more exotic looking varieties of these flowers are used in things like congratulatory bouquets and get well arrangements. They are also used to help brighten up a dark room, or cheer a person up. With bright colors, as well as more dull varieties, these flowers are easily usable for almost any arrangement. These flowers also add a touch of exotic feel to many bouquets.

Many times, lilies are paired with similar colored flowers. Other times, they are paired with contrasting colors to add a touch of flair. These beautiful flowers are frequently paired with daisies, other lilies, and greens. Calla Lilies are frequently paired with roses, especially for wedding bouquets.

There are different varieties of lilies throughout the world. Asiatic lilies have some of the most exotic looks, while the Washington lily is one of the most common varieties. No matter what you are looking for - classic or exotic - you can find the perfect lily for your arrangement. With a variety of species, as well as a variety of colors, lilies can be paired with almost any other flowers to make your bouquet unique.

9 Roses Named After Celebrities.

While many stars view the Hollywood Walk of Fame or the sidewalk outside of Mann’s Chinese Theatre as the mark of a true success, florists and rose-enthusiasts know better. Many people may think they have achieved superstardom, but they are nothing if they don’t have a rose named after them.

1. Audrey Hepburn
FLOWER: Apple Blossom Pink-Hybrid Tea Rose

One of the most iconic and talented actresses of all-time, Audrey Hepburn has a rose named in her honor. Otherwise known as the apple blossom pink hybrid tea rose, the Audrey Hepburn is the perfect table accent for those looking for the perfect breakfast at you-know-where. (Denny’s.)

2. Betty White
FLOWER: Blush Pink Hybrid Tea Rose

Enjoying resurgence in her career during the twilight of her life, beloved comedienne Betty White has also been honored with a rose bearing her namesake. Like Betty White, the blush pink-to-cream hybrid tea rose is popular for a while, and then takes about 20 years off before becoming incredibly popular again. It is worth noting that White is the only Golden Girl to have achieved such an honor, though Bea Arthur is rumored to have a line of cigars named after her in the near future.

3. Dolly Parton
FLOWER: Darl (Coppery-Orange/Red Hybrid Tea Rose)

The Darl, coppery-orange/red-hybrid tea rose is said to have an amazing voice and be unusually top-heavy, making this namesake a no-brainer. Fans of the rose also enjoy a day at the DarlcopperyorangeredhybridtearoseWood Theme Park in Tennessee, though it is known to be a little pricey. Complimented nicely by magnolias (particularly of the steel variety), a bouquet of Dolly Parton is the perfect gift for anyone working nine to five.

4. General Washington
FLOWER: Bright Red Hybrid Perpetual Rose

Sure, President George Washington has his face on the quarter, the one-dollar bill, and the nation’s Capitol named after him, but what does General Washington have? We must not forget that General Washington is the reason America won its independence from Great Britain, where as President Washington pretty much just hung out playing on the White House lawn. For this reason, the bright red hybrid perpetual rose is lovingly referred to as the General Washington.

5. LeAnn Rimes
FLOWER: Yellow-Blushed Hybrid Tea Rose

Speaking of timeless figures, integral in our founding as a country, LeAnn Rimes also has a rose. The yellow blushed rose hybrid tea rose was named after her as she found bountiful success at an unusually young age. While the rose is not as wildly popular as it once was, it holds a special place in the heart of anyone who attended a school dance from 1996-2000.

6. Paul McCartney
FLOWER: Medium Pink Hybrid Tea Rose

The medium pink hybrid tea rose is known better by its fab nickname, the Paul McCartney. Sir Paul is the only Beatle (or member of Wings) to receive such an honor. While there were rumors for a brief time that the medium pink hybrid tea rose was dead, it turned out later to be just a hoax.

7. Rosie O’Donnell
FLOWER: Red-Blend Hybrid Tea Rose

The red blend hybrid tea rose is known for slanting to the left in most light. It has also been known to talk about itself for hours, and is greatly despised by Donald Trump. For these reasons, coming up with a nickname for this flower was a no-brainer. While Rosie O’Donnell may butt heads with Barbara Walters because of “differences of opinion,” the truth is clear; Babs is jealous, as Rosie is the only member of The View, past or present, to have a rose named after her.

8. Ronald Reagan
FLOWER: Red and White Reverse Hybrid Tea Rose

When the red with white reverse hybrid tea rose first introduced red-with-white-reverse-hybrid-tea-rose-omics in the 80’s, America scoffed. But when Ronald Reagan took up the cause under a similar name, America rejoiced. Because of this, we honor Reagan with his own rose and a Presidential library. One of only three presidents to have such an honor (four if you count “General” Washington), Ronald Reagan can rest easily knowing his influence will impact gardeners for years to come.

9. William Shakespeare
FLOWER: Deep Scarlet Modern Shrub Rose

A rose by any other name would not smell as sweet, as Shakespeare would be less inclined to write about it. The deep scarlet modern shrub rose is called the William Shakespeare, generally because it is symbolic of the passion, love, life, and the death that Shakespeare wrote about so poignantly. While Shakespeare’s work continues to influence generations, his rose continues to be one of the standards in beautiful floral arrangements.

Conclusion:

While having a flower named after you may seem like a random and trite achievement, for many it is quite the honor. While there is seemingly no end to the amount of hybrid flower creations that can be created and named, those who already have their monikers secure can rest easy knowing that they will live on forever, if not in the history books, then at least in somebody’s garden.

A Buyers Guide to Picking out the Right Corsage.

It is a sure bet that if you are guy or a girl, you'll run into some situation that will require the purchase of a corsage. While the traditional event that calls for the purchase of a corsage is a prom or school dance/gathering, weddings and holiday events are equally as popular for guys to purchase corsages.

The decision to purchase a corsage for a girl is probably the easiest part of the decision-making process. There will be many complex decisions that will need to be made while you are picking out a corsage such as colors, type, size and even how many flowers are in the corsage.

To make the decision-making process a little bit easier, here is a quick buyers guide to help make the final decision on what corsage is right for the occasion.

The flower color and dress combo. No one wants to wear a corsage that clashes terribly with their dress or outfit. It is a good idea to try and match the flower color to the outfit that is being worn at the occasion, but that isn't always a possibility. If you do not know the color of the outfit or can't find a flower that matches, try to stick with a neutral color such as reds, whites or pastels.

Wrist vs. pin on. There are two types of corsages. There is the pin on type that requires the wearer to have it pinned to their outfit and there is the wrist corsage which has a small strap of elastic that allows it to be worn on the wrist. Either corsage is acceptable but try to think about which corsage would best suit the occasion. If the wearer will have to use their hands a lot it might be best to go with a pin on, while if their outfit won't allow a pin on or they don't want to have such a heavy item on their wrist, a wrist corsage might be best.

Size and amount of flowers. Everyone wants to impress the person they are presenting the corsage to by having tons of flowers in the arrangement. However, sometimes that can work against them. Try to take into account the size of the corsage to the wearer. No one wants to have the corsage be so huge that it is all the person notices. Try to keep the corsage in a proportionate size to the wearer.

By taking some of these helpful hints and advice into mind it should help with the corsage purchasing process.

Proper Fresh Flower Care Promotes Longer Lasting Flowers

Everyone enjoys having a bright and beautiful floral arrangement in their home or office. However, those bright flowers don't usually look so bright the second or third day of sitting on a desk or table. While many people just chalk it up to Mother Nature's way of playing games with fresh flowers, that isn't the case at all. With proper fresh flower care and maintenance, floral arrangements can last several weeks without getting that dried up, weepy flower look.

The proper fresh flower care is more than just changing the water and keeping the vase or holding container clean. Here are some of the recommended fresh flower care tips that will keep those beautiful floral arrangements bright for weeks to come.

Check water level. How high you keep the water in a vase or container could play a major impact in how long the flowers stay fresh. It is recommended to keep the water level higher than expected to allow the whole flower to be able to soak in the water.

Mix in flower food. It might be surprising that there is such a thing known as flower food but there is. The small packets that come from the florist are filled with nourishing chemicals that can help keep the flowers flourishing and bright for a week's time. Just simply add a bit of the flower food whenever you change the water and it could improve the lifespan of the fresh flowers.

Ensure the stems are cut regularly and properly. Fresh flower stems will need to be cut regularly and with proper care. It is a good idea to make sure that you are not smashing the flower stem or flattening the end. Try to use sharp knives or scissors to cut the flower stem at an angle. An angle cut allows the flower to soak up the maximum amount of flower and food. The stems should be cut every two to three days and only about two-thirds of the way from the bottom.

Clean out debris. The water should be changed daily and the flower holding container should be checked for debris such as spider webs, flower leaves or pieces of the stem. These pieces of debris can cause bacteria and fungi to grow in the container which can prevent the flowers from looking bright and fresh and even shorten the lifespan of the fresh flowers.

With the proper care fresh flowers will appear bright and vibrant for at least two weeks after receiving them. They'll look just like the first day you got them.

A Romantic Valentine's Day Doesn't Cost a Fortune.

So, it's again the time of the year when love starts filling air with its romantic scent, and from a week back you start finding yourself in a world painted all over in pink. And your excitement multiplies if you have your lovely one to date this Valentines. However, the thought that constantly makes you nervous is, “What’s the best idea for my Valentine date?”

You often find yourself juggling with thoughts, such as, “I definitely don’t want to end up in something boring or dull, but what to do, an extravagant romantic date at a top-class restaurant is going to cost me a week of sleepless nights later!” This appears to be a problem for those who actually care about making their Valentine’s Day a day filled with love and romance, but are not really aware of how to choose the best idea for their date.

Well, there might be a number of ideas to choose from and remember, not every Valentine’s Day should dig a hole in your pocket either. Instead of impressing your Valentine with your wealth, it’s much better to impress them with your wits, romantic taste, and care you have for them. To illustrate that you care for your loved one, you can choose something they often like to do, such as going for a romantic movie followed by a long walk along the beachside holding hands together. Many people are flattered if their partners are subtly romantic and can surprise them by choosing certain non-usual ideas for their Valentine’s Day.

You can save a fair amount of money by simulating an even more intimate environment at home by decorating it with cute and cuddly toys, flowers like red roses and jasmine, and enjoy a romantic candle light dinner having soft music playing along. Similarly, romantic and erotic gifts, such as roses, chocolates, and even naughtier ones like lingerie, blindfolds, massage oils, champagne, wines etc. can also add that desired effect to your Valentine's Day celebration. They should indeed be expressive of your true affectionate feelings and intimacy with your partner rather than being merely expensive and ostentatious.

Roses - A Timeless Classic?

Roses are considered the ultimate romantic gesture and are ancient symbols of beauty and love.

While tradition shows that roses are mainly given as a dozen, other amounts have meanings too.

A sinlge rose in full boom means "I LoveYou"

A dozen roses can symbolize a dozen ways that I love you.

Three and four dozen roses represents a romance unlike any other and unconditional, everlasting love.

The colours that you choose also have meanings.

Red is such a passionate colour and rightly so portrays passion, love and "I LoveYou"

White roses symbolize a purity and innocence.

With a combination of red and white this can show unity and togetherness.

The paler varieties of roses such as light pink and lemon are more associated with friendship and a special bond two people have other than romantic love.

We believe that this stunning flower will always be a timeless classic!

7 Most Poisonous Plants

While most plants are leafy and harmless, there are a few plants that if ingested can kill you cold. As a guideline, you should refrain from eating wild plants, but if you come across any of the following, it becomes a rule; DO NOT EAT.

1.  Castor Bean

Ricinus communis as it is known by nobody is the plant responsible for the castor bean.  While castor bean plants yield castor oil (which cures what ails you if taken in small doses before 1955), it also holds deadly amounts of the toxin ricin.

A bowl of castor beans ready to murder anyone looking for a handful of almonds

Ricin is most present in the seeds of this plant, meaning poisoning is mostly a threat for pets, babies and idiots. Fortunately, although enough ricin can be fatal, it is easily treatable in adults if help is sought quickly. Unfortunately, because the two main culprits of accidental ingestion are babies and pets, not everyone is as lucky. As a general rule, anyone with children or dogs should refrain from making their own castor oil at home.

2.  Deadly Nightshade

Although it sounds like a comic book villain, deadly nightshade is actually a rather harmless-looking plant. However, for those who use looks as the basis for whether or not to eat something, nightshade offers a pretty unwelcome surprise.

If looks could kill...

While horses, sheep and birds can’t get enough of the leaves or luscious ripe berries that deadly nightshade offers, this plant is 100% deadly poison to humans. Anywhere from 2-20 berries are enough to kill an adult, meaning no matter how delicious they look, be sure to avoid deadly nightberries.

3.  Chokecherry

Once again, paying the slightest attention to the names of some of these plants should be all you need to know in order to understand that ingesting them would be a bad idea.

You distinguish the chokecherry from regular cherries by the way they look EXACTLY THE SAME

Chokecherry is high in hydrocyanic acid. Now, I’m not a doctor, but I know that “hydro” means “water,” which would lead one to believe that these cherries are okay to eat as water is essential for life. However I also know that “cyanic” means “cyanide,” and “acid” means “acid.” Therefore, by paying attention to this miniature etymology lesson, we can deduce that “chokecherry” is filled with “water cyanide acid,” and therefore “shouldn’t be eaten ever.”

4.  Rosary Pea

This small, colorful seed is chocked full of the ultra-concentrated poison abrin, which means it is the perfect choice for a religious adornment.

If at any point you eat part of this, pray faster.

Once again, the truth is in the name as these seeds are used predominately for rosary making. While very few people have ever eaten their rosaries, it can be certain that those who did were not forced to wait long before meeting their heavenly creator. As little as one of these seeds can shut down your kidneys, liver and spleen, which would then result in almost instant death. Although the rosary is a symbol of faith, eating one would be a display of idiocy.

5.  Water Hemlock

Whether you’re poisoning the neighborhood cats, mixing a potion or planning on executing Socrates, nothing works better than hemlock.

Water Hemlock, before poisoning someone

Unlike other plants on this list, hemlock offers not only a quick but also a rather violent death for all those who ingest it. Violent convulsions and muscle tremors as the body shuts down are common in hemlock poisoning. Although this flower looks rather pretty, ingesting it could get rather ugly.

6.  Monkshood

Also known as Wolf’s Bane, Monkshood is another one of those “so-often-featured-as-an-ingredient-in-the-potions-of-TV-witches” plants.

Because they look like little hoods.  And, just like the robes of monks, they are bright purple.

Wolf’s Bane actually gets its nickname as it has been known to poison and kill wolves, birds and other wild animals who graze on the plant. Though that explains the nickname, it is still unclear as to which monks happened to give the plant its actual title.

7.  Oleander

Often considered to be the mother load of poisonous plants, Oleander contains a cocktail of natural poisons, all of which can be fatal if eaten.

A lovely bouquet of death

Oleander is a dense and somewhat pretty shrub that is found throughout North America. Although its ability to grow quickly in less than ideal climates and soil makes it a favorite of construction workers or anyone else who is planting foliage in a hurry, its presence makes it a danger to any human or animals around it. While eating the beautiful shrubbery on the side of the road may seem like a good idea, doing so could be the last idea you have.

Conclusion

There are hundreds of poisonous plants growing freely in the United States. While the effects of the poison can range from sickness to death, there are toxins in far more plants than most people realize. As a general rule, I would suggest sticking to salads for the greens in your diet, and leaving the bushes and shrubs outside alone.

So Many Tulips, So Little Time.

If you are looking for a flower that gives a feel of days gone by and simplistic beauty, the tulip may be exactly the flower that you are looking for. These gorgeous, simple buds come in a large variety of colors that can fit almost any bouquet or floral arrangement.

Though most people identify tulips with the Dutch culture, they actually originated in Turkey and Persia many centuries ago. In fact, these flowers were a large part of the culture as well as the art in these countries. These flowers were even used in the turbans of the people of these countries. The tulip did not actually gain its popularity in the Netherlands until some time in the 17th Century. At that point, though, they became extremely popular, and also quite expensive, as everyone wanted some of these amazingly beautiful and diverse flowers.

Tulips come in such a large variety of colors and shades that it is hard to give a list. In fact, some say that there are well over 3,000 color varieties of these amazing flowers. Not only can you find solid colored tulips, there are also varieties that are multi colored and even striped. Finding the perfect shade or shades of colors for your bouquet becomes easy when there are so many varieties. No matter the color scheme of your bouquet, you will be able to find the perfect tulip to add in.

The original meaning of tulips has endured the ages. These flowers show perfect, true love. Though some color variations are said to have slightly different meanings, this is the overall theme that is present with tulips. This makes these flowers great for many different types of floral arrangements. They have become extremely popular for occasions like Mother's Day. They are also popular in wedding bouquets, for birthdays, and even for funeral arrangements. Yellow tulips, for example, show not only hopeless love, but also happiness and cheerfulness.

Today, tulips are grown and cultivated all around the world. This makes them one of the easier types of flowers to get year round. No matter when you are looking for the perfect flower, a tulip can easily send your message any time. Tulips, because they are so popular, are frequently a large part of many different floral arrangements you will find. The variety that they have, and the symbolism of the flowers, adds a whole new perspective to your bouquets.

So Many Tulips, So Little Time.

Examples of Flowers in Greek or Roman Mythology.

Flowers have long had a captivating and alluring effect on people for many centuries. The evidence of this captivating nature of flowers can be found in the various examples of flowers in mythology. While every form of mythology from Chinese to Indian mythology has dozens of references to flowers, there are several dozen examples of flowers and symbolism of flowers in the Greek or Roman mythology stories.

Here is an exciting look at how flowers have played an impacting factor in one of the oldest folklore around: The Greek and Roman mythology.

The Goddess of Flowers. In the Greek and Roman myths there is a goddess of flowers. She is believed to have scattered flowers all over the world which is how these pretty objects are in every corner of the globe. This floral goddess is known to the Greeks as Chloris and the Romans called her Flora.

The Greek Myth of Adonis. The Greek myth of Adonis is believed to tell of the making of the red flower known as anemone. The myth tells of Adonis, a young handsome man who was a lover to the goddess of love, Aphrodite. While on a hunting mission, Adonis is mortally wounded. As he is dying, his lover Aphrodite comes to his side just in time to see him bleed to death. The blood that Adonis shed turned into the flowers known as anemone.

The Greek Myth of Hyacinthus and Apollo. This myth tells of the making of a version of lillis known as hyacinth. Hyacinthus and Apollo were playing discus when Apollo threw the disc. It was redirected by a jealous god and the disc killed Hyacinthus. As Apollo grieved over the loss of Hyacinthus, a white flower grew up out of the blood from the injury. Apollo picked the white flower and named it hyacinth in honor of his friend.

The Myth of Narcissus. Narcissus was believed to be a very handsome character in Greek mythology. He would allow people to fall in love with him and then pass them off after they fell in love with him. The gods did not like that he treated people this way and forced him to fall in love with his own reflection. Narcissus was so in love with the reflection that he tried to embrace it and drowned. Where he died a flower known as the narcissus grew in its place and became a symbol of selfishness and hardheartedness.

These are just a few examples of how flowers have played a role in the Greek and Roman mythology system.

The Symbolism of Birth Flowers

There are a lot of symbolic items attached with the month of a person's birth. There are zodiac signs, astrology signs and birth stones that are all supposed to give a person a general idea of their personality, feelings and moods. While these items are the most commonly associated with birthdays, there is also another object that comes with specific meanings when associated with a birth month. The flower.

Flowers have a long standing status in cultures and just as there are birthstones and calendar signs to tell about a personality there are also flowers that can give a person a general idea of how a person's personality will be based off of what flower is attached to that month.

Here is a look at the various flowers attached with each month of the year.

January is represented with the carnation. The carnation can stand for happiness, affection and deep love for the child. The traditional colors for January are pink, white and red carnations.

February comes along with the Iris or Violet which represents purity, faithfulness and modesty as parts of the personality of a child born under this flower.

March has the daffodil as a symbol of the personality of a child born within that month. The daffodil represents affection, cheerfulness and a granter of wishes.

April springs into spring with the birth flower of a Daisy. This cheerful flower shows the personality traits of cheerfulness, curious and delicate natures.

May comes with the refreshing look of the Lily of the Valley, which is known for the traits of complete life, sweetness and return of happiness to one's life.

June spreads it's feelings of happiness with the birth flower of the Rose. Roses are known for overall happiness, friendship and love and the personality traits of being strong and beautiful.

July babies are born under the Larkspur which comes to represent the personality traits of luck, laughter and light heartedness.

August rounds out the summer with a symbol of beauty and strength of character with the Gladiolus.

September falls into fall with the Aster which represents the traits of devotion, daintiness and life and joy.

October shines bright with Calendula as a symbol of the grace, gratitude, joy and love of nature a person born under them has.

November has the Chrysanthemum as the birth flower of choice to represent those born in November's personality traits of compassion, cheerfulness and good with friendships.

December comes with the traditional holiday flowers of holly or the poinsettia which stand for success and wealth.

Mother's Day Bouquet's

Flowers make an amazing gift. However, your choice of flower really does matter. A supermarket bought bunch just won’t have the same effect as a proper arrangement, and it just won’t cut it for Mothers Day. Here’s how to pick a great Mothers Day bouquet for one of the most important women in your life.
Picking A Flower
Before you choose a bouquet, think about your Mum’s favourite flower. Consider if you know what her favourite is, and if not, how you could find out. Could you ask a friend or sibling? If not, think back to which flowers you’ve seen your Mum admiring, or she’s brought home. Common favourite flowers include roses, lilies, chrysanthemums, germini and freesias. If you can’t remember, choose a bouquet with a range of flowers.
Choose A Colour
Another consideration is what colour flowers to buy. Many bouquets focus around one or two colours, as this gives a more professional look then mixing a wide range of colours. You could choose a bouquet which is in your Mum’s favourite colours, or just a colour or shade which you think will cheer her up and look amazing.
Pick A Good Arrangement
A good bouquet is striking, and you can’t help but admire it. If there is a mix of flowers or colours, they are carefully matched, to look well coordinated. They look professional, and alive. If you aren’t familiar with floristry, picking a good bouquet can seem difficult, but it’s really not. Simply trust your eye, and pick a bouquet which both appeals to you and impresses you.
Choose A Good Company
Once you’ve picked a stunning bouquet, you need to make sure the flowers will be fresh and alive, and the company will deliver them on time. My favourite company is SerenataFlowers.com, an online florist with a huge variety of bouquets and extras, such as chocolates and teddy bears. The flowers come in every colour imaginable, from neon orange to a variety of pinks, and they are all arranged in professional, stunning bouquets. Plus, when your ordering from the UK’s online florist with free delivery 6 days a week, you know you are in safe hands!

Bunches of Flowers

Today, with just one job, you will be making enough to survive. This world has become so demanding that multiples will help you out: multiple jobs, multiple cell phones etc. This principle also applies when you are trying to please the love of your life. A single flower cannot be as fitting for your loved one as for example, three dozen red roses in full bloom. Yes, make that one special person feel as if she or he is the most special person in the world with bunches of his or her favorite flowers. Where do you go for these? Where else but serenata Flowers?

Single flowers Versus Bunches of Flowers
While a single flower may be considered a sweet or romantic gesture, there are times when one feels the  need to be extra generous or extravagant. Imagine the thrill and surprise of your significant other or family member when you walk in with bunches of flowers from serenata flowers.

Colors of a Rose

The symbolism of a rose depends on the color. Each color represents a different intention or emotion behind the rose that make them the perfect gift for any occasion. The rose has inspired many individuals for centuries to make up a language of the flower by assigning meanings to each color. It is always best to know the meanings associated with a rose’s color when you give them to someone else. When you choose a particular color for someone, you bring a new depth to the gift.

A red rose is unmistakably meant as an expression of desire and love. Red roses show deep emotion and can also be used to give a significant other when you are apologizing. Red roses should be limited only to those you have strong feelings for, otherwise you may give off the wrong impression.

White roses represent purity and innocence. White roses are given to celebrate new beginnings or to show sympathy for a loss. The perfect situation to give a bouquet of white roses is to a new bride, as a housewarming gift, or to someone who is ill in the hospital.

Yellow roses, like many of the others, do not express feelings of romance. The yellow rose is given to celebrate friendship and offer a sense of joy. A bouquet of yellow roses is the perfect gift for a friend you have not seen in a while or as a pick-me-up gift for a friend that is down.

There are different levels of pink for roses and each have a slightly different meaning. Light pink roses symbolize innocence, while dark pink roses symbolize gratitude. A bouquet of light pink roses would be appropriate for a new mother and a bouquet of dark pink roses would be appropriate to thank a friend or family member for their help during a crisis.

Orange roses remind people of passion and energy. They can be used as an expression of pride and fascination. Orange roses are like red roses in their meaning. Orange roses would be an appropriate gift for someone new in your life that you are beginning to develop strong feelings for.

A bouquet of roses with a mixture of colors can sum up your feelings for a person all at once. By combining the roses together, you are personalizing the way you feel and communicating it with a beautiful array of fresh cut roses.

Flower's are a Girl's Best Friend

Have you heard the saying, “Flowers are a girl’s best friend”? Well, when they look this good, that’s definitely true. Whether you are looking for something to brighten up your house during Spring, Mothers Day gifts or just because, some fresh, colourful flowers are sure to cheer everybody up, and look amazing.
Serenta Flowers
One of my favourite flower companies is SerenataFlowers.com. They’ve got an amazing range of flowers, with styles and colours that everyone is sure to love...from bright neon colours to more traditional creams and whites, the arrangements are stylish and co-ordinated, and they use local florists to deliver flowers all over London, so you can send fresh, gorgeous flowers from wherever you are.
Amazing Arrangements
I love the stunning “Pink Delight Giftbag” arrangement. A mixture of liliums, eustomas, germinis, gyposophelias and roses in a range of gorgeous pink colours, from vivid neons to pale pinks, with a scattering of white. It’s presented in a light pink giftbag with pink tissue paper and cellophane...it’s the type of gift anyone would be amazed to receive!
Another favourite is “Scented Pleasure,” a neon orange and white arrangement featuring daisy mums and lilies...it’s a colour splash that can’t fail to bring a smile to your face, and will remind you of the gorgeous smells of summer. If orange isn’t your colour, “Sugar Hill” combines violet liatris with gorgeous golden lilies to stunning effect, and envokes images of summer picnics, sunsets and holidays which will instantly boost any mood. They even offer the stunning “Narnian Dreams”, a traditional mixture of lilies and roses in stunning ivory, cream and white colours. It’s a very classy bouquet in muted yet striking colours, which you could use for simply any occasion.
Exciting Extras
Flowers aren’t all that SerenataFlowers.com offer, either. You can choose when to have your flowers delivered, including choosing from either morning or afternoon, or avoiding the school run. You can boost the size of any bouquets from standard to deluxe or grandissimo, and you can even add extras, such as teddy bears, chocolates and balloons. So whatever the occasion, you can trust the UK’s leading online florist, which offers free delivery 6 days a week. Get ordering!

Choosing Flowers Appropriate for the Occasion

Flowers are a way to express romantic interest or convey sympathy. They can also just be a holiday gift or birthday present. Even though flowers can be appropriate for all different occasions you should make sure that the blossoms you select are appropriate for the situation.

For a sympathy bouquet try an understated arrangement. Orchids or lilies add interest but still stay within a basic white color palette. You can also go with the recipient’s favorite flower or color such as an iris for someone who loves purple. White roses are cost effective and gender neutral.

If you're sending a birthday bouquet it should be vibrant and cheerful. Look for a mixed bouquet instead of just sending one flower. This can also incorporate bold color schemes like orange or yellow. Pick a bloom with a sophisticated but tropical look like dendrobium for a touch of vibrancy.

Add personal touches to flowers before you give them as a gift. You could do this with your choice of vase. Try a basic box that can represent a birthday present. This can also be an item that your friend can use long after the bouquet is gone, such as an antique pitcher. Give a fun arrangement of balloons or a teddy bear to complete the look. Just make sure that all of the items coordinate with the floral arrangement so it's still the focal point.

It's also important to get a unique look when you buy traditional bouquets. Roses are a staple for Valentine's Day, but you can add small touches for a customization. Instead of just one color of roses you can go for a mix of pinks and whites.

Another option for choosing appropriate gifts is to consider the recipient’s personality. You can gather this information from wardrobe choices, home decor, or even what car your friend drives. Roses work well for a traditional personality. Daises and sunflowers are vibrant and convey fun. For a more contemporary look try sophisticated calla lilies.

To celebrate births, try a lot of pastel blossoms. You may even be able to send a blooming houseplant like miniature roses. There are plenty of pink flowers for girls such as daises. For a boy focus more on yellow or white.

When in doubt just get an arrangement that's evocative of the season. A fall arrangement might have leaf accents with autumnal orange or yellow. Spring flowers will feature lots of pastel colors. For winter you can go with a basic poinsettia arrangement or a centerpiece that only uses the color white.

The Christmas Flower: The Poinsettia

As the holidays start to get closer, many people are trying to decide what flowers they should decorate their homes or offices with. There are many great flowers for the holidays, but the most iconic of all Christmas flowers is the poinsettia. This gorgeous red flower has been known and seen as a Christmas flower, and even more broadly, a holiday flower, for a very long time.

The flower, which is native in Mexico, was first introduced in North America, and more specifically in the United States, in 1825. They are now grown in every state in the United States for commerical purposes. These gorgeous, bright red flowers have become so popular for the holidays that they actually are said to be the most popular of all potted plants sold during the holidays, accounting for over 85 percent of flower sales. In fact, these flowers make up well over $200 million dollars in sales during the holiday season.

You may be wondering why they are so popular. Not only are poinsettias gorgeous, they are also hearty. They can last much longer than many other flower varieties. The coloring of the popular red poinsettia is also the perfect red for the holidays. The legend of the flower most definitely helps, as well. It is said that the flower came about in Mexico at a Christmas celebration. A little girl had nothing to offer, and so she brought a bouquet of weeds. Though at first she felt ashamed, she knew that any gift, if it was offered with love, would be perfect. As she lay the weeds on the alter, they blossomed into what is now known as the poinsettia.

Because the flower is so popular, many people become concerned that it may be poisonous. This can be extremely detrimental if there are children that will be around the poinsettia. Luckily, it has been shown that the flower is not poisonous. In fact, a child would need to eat well over 500 of the leaves before even feeling slightly ill. This is great news for those who want to have the poinsettia as a centerpiece of their holiday decor.

If you are trying to find a great holiday gift for someone who is a flower enthusiast, a poinsettia may be a good option. There are actually over 100 varieties of the flower available. Even though the red poinsettia is the most common and the most popular, it is by no means the only option available. There are also pink and white poinsettias that you can easily find.

5 Tips of Flower Etiquette

When it comes to sending a simple, yet thoughtful gift, the first thing that comes to mind is flowers. The act of sending or gifting flowers can brighten a day, make someone feel better, or even express your sympathy or love. Sending flowers might seem as if it is just a simple act, but there are times when gifting flowers can be potentially embarrassing or improper. Here are five etiquette tips that will help prevent any potential awkward flower sending/giving moments.

1. First dates and wrong impressions. First dates can be awkward enough without adding an embarrassing flower incident. Some flowers represent love, while others represent friendship. Make sure that the flower you give is a neutral flower that will not embarrass your date. You don't want to start a date off with a flower that says friends only.

2. Gifts to the workplace. Sending flowers to the workplace can be a great way to say "I'm thinking of you," but it can be a potential breach of etiquette. Some people might be embarrassed by receiving such a gift at work. Always consider the person you are sending the flowers to and their possible reaction.

3. Mismatched outfits and corsages. Always check with the person receiving the corsage to see what color their outfit will be. You wouldn't want to gift a light pink flower with a neon green dress. Also consider the size of the corsage. Try not to make it too large or small. Make sure the size of the corsage is balanced to your date.

4. Unwanted sympathy flowers. During times of bereavement, sending flowers is a popular way to express sympathy, but there is also potential for an awkward moment. Some families would prefer the money to be sent to a selected charity or cause instead of spent on flowers. If you are considering sending flowers to the funeral home, check to make sure the flowers are wanted by the family. This will avoid any breach of flower etiquette.

5. Hospital rules and get well baskets. The lovely scents and bright colors of get well baskets can really brighten the day of someone that isn't feeling well. However, some hospitals may have rules against what type of flowers can be accepted, restrictions on container types, or even if flowers are allowed at all. Check with the hospital before sending a get well basket.

11 Fabulous Celebrity Wedding Bouquets.

Most young girls grow up dreaming of having a princess-caliber wedding. Unfortunately, anything greater than a trip to the courthouse these days can be insanely expensive; this is why so many young brides-to-be live out their fantasies mimicking the style or trends of celebrity weddings. While some portions of a celebrity wedding can be too expensive even to fake, one piece that most women can afford is the bouquet. These are just some of the most beautiful celebrity brides, and their hand-flowers of choice.

1. Elizabeth Hurley

YEAR: 2007

HUSBAND: Arun Nayar

Hurley looked absolutely stunning in her Versace gown, marrying Indian textile heir Arun Nayar. Although most people cannot afford to wear this gown without selling their house, most people can afford a simple, elegant lily of the valley bouquet.

Native throughout the Northern Hemisphere in Asia and Europe (with just a bit present on the Eastern seaboard), lily of the valley is a common floral presence in many weddings. While having it shipped to your geographic location may not be worth the effort, for some brides it is the perfect way to feel like a star without spending like one.

2. Courtney Cox Arquette

YEAR: 1999

HUSBAND: David Arquette

While a bouquet of red roses is one of the more expensive bunches of flowers, it can also make a powerful statement and a bold accent.

Courtney was married to David Arquette on June 12, 1999. Complimenting her Valentino silk gown, she carried a bouquet of deep red roses, a symbol of love and passion. While roses are not cheap, they are also not a bad place to spend some extra money, as a little can go a long way.

3. Elizabeth Taylor’s First Wedding

YEAR: 1950

HUSBAND: Conrad Hilton, Jr.

While the remnants from the bouquets Elizabeth Taylor carried are enough to fill a greenhouse, her first one in 1950 consisted of white orchids, achieving a classy look.

Marrying Conrad Hilton Jr., and enjoying wedded bliss for only three quarters of a year, Elizabeth Taylor began her parade of weddings with a classic bouquet of relatively affordable white orchids. While no bride is hoping for that “first of nine” vibe on her wedding day, many brides love the “1950’s classic” feel, which is why this bouquet can easily add a touch of vintage charm.

4. Jessica Simpson

YEAR: 2002

HUSBAND: Nick Lachey

Finally, a bouquet most people can’t even afford to fake. Jessica Simpson married Nick Lachey on October 26, 2002 in Austin, Texas. While the marriage didn’t last, it was a remarkable display of what could happen when two, young, rich stars marry each other.

The five-point stephanotis is an expensive flower, coming in between five to eight dollars per stem (depending on location), and requiring easily 100 stems to make a bouquet. However, what made Simpson’s bouquet so lavish wasn’t the stephanotis; it was the crystals and pearls adorning the center of each flower. For those with a hot glue gun and a lot of patience, this look could be attempted, but for the vast majority of people this is a bouquet best left to the stars.

5. Gwen Stefani

YEAR: 2002

HUSBAND: Gavin Rossdale

Another bouquet on the pricey side of expensive, Gwen Stefani’s phalaenopsis orchids spared no expense on her wedding day when she held a beautiful bouquet.

Married in London on September 14, 2002, everything about Stefani’s wedding walked the line between classic and hip. Whether it was pink accents in her dress, the distinctly British double-decker busses transporting guests to the reception, or this unique bouquet, the wedding of Gwen Stefani to Gavin Rossdale is one that brides continue to hope for.

6. Salma Hayek

YEAR: 2009

HUSBAND: Francois Henri Pinault

Being a star has certain perks, like the ability to have your wedding cake and eat it too.

Carrying a bouquet of white orchids and stephanotis, Salma Hayek married her husband twice, once in a small ceremony on Valentine’s Day, and once in much grander fashion in a star-studded bash taking place in Venice. While most brides will have to choose, Hayek proves that with enough money, you can get married as exquisitely and often as you want.

7. Victoria Beckham

YEAR: 1999

HUSBAND: David Beckham

Holding what appears to be a pile of yard waste, Victoria Beckham set the bar relatively low for young brides hoping to achieve the Posh Spice look on their wedding days.

A bouquet fashioned from ivy, Italian Ruskus, eucalyptus, apples, twine, duct tape and a few well-placed staples, Victoria Beckham had no problem being a little bit different and a bit rural when it came to her wedding bouquet. While fashioning such a bouquet appears to be easy and affordable, it is unclear as to what bride would even want to.

8. Heidi Montag

YEAR: 2009

HUSBAND: Spencer Pratt

Exhibiting an uncharacteristically high amount of class, the wedding of reality stars Heidi and Spencer remained relatively classy despite their involvement on TV.

Carrying a classic bouquet of yellow and white daffodils, Heidi Montag looked elegant and beautiful on her wedding day. While daffodils may be inexpensive, they are also versatile and beautiful, meaning a little will go a very long way.

9. Fergie

YEAR: 2010

HUSBAND: Josh Duhamel

Once again, the union of two stars seems to be the tipping point for exotic, expensive, and amazing bouquets.

Carrying a bouquet of white roses and gardenias, each accented with rhinestones, Fergie married Josh Duhamel in January of 2010. While the individual pieces of this bouquet may not sound over-the-top expensive, once again the actual act of affixing such gems to flowers is a tedious and pricey process. While any woman with a free eight hours to kill before her wedding day could give it a shot, it is most likely a practice best left to the professionals (and therefore, the celebrities).

10. Ivanka Trump

YEAR: 2009

HUSBAND: Jared Kushner

When your wedding takes place on land named after you, chances are high that it’ll be an expensive and beautiful day. While not all brides can hope to be wed on one of their father’s golf courses, most of them can carry the same flowers as someone who was.

Sporting a bouquet of white roses and stephanotis, Ivanka Trump’s wedding day flowers were pricey, but not outrageous. Well within the grasp of most normal human beings, these flowers cost a few extra dollars, but it is guaranteed to be money well spent.

11. Princess Diana

YEAR: 1981

HUSBAND: Charles, Prince of Wales

Considered by many to be the wedding of the century, there has been no ceremony as public, as lavish, or as traditionally beautiful as Princess Diana’s.

Holding a bouquet that literally contained one of everything from the aforementioned list, the beautiful princess-to-be had the unique task of holding one of the largest bouquets ever assembled. Since her dress was made from more material than is present on the average bride and bridesmaids combined, anything smaller would have been dwarfed by her own mass. Weighing in at just less than ten pounds, it may be a good idea to leave this bouquet Lady Di’s, alone.

Conclusion:

While not everyone can afford to have the wedding of the stars, almost everyone can afford to incorporate a small piece of it. With just a few extra dollars spent in the right place, a relatively simple wedding can appear to be extraordinary.

6 Flowers You Should Never Give to Anyone EVER

Every woman loves to receive a thoughtful bouquet, whether it's for her birthday,
Valentine's day, or a special anniversary. And while some men may not be comfortable
admitting it, flowers can melt their hearts, too.

But not all flowers are created equal. Take it from me: if you gave someone close to you any
of the flowers on this list, they'd be pretty annoyed. While most flowers are beautiful
to behold, these strange flowers are some of the most unique in the world....uniquely awful,
that is!

1.  Clematis Florida Sieboldii

This is the bridesmaid dress of the flower kingdom:

Clemantis Florida flower

Not only is this flower too large to be an Easter boutonnière, too ugly to be a house plant, and too flimsy to be a doorstop, it also seems to bear the same texture and shape as one of the McDonald’s Fry kids. It's not clear if this plant was put on this earth for entertainment or botanical purposes.

Clemantis Trans Fatteus
Clematis Trans Fatteus

2.  Amorphophallus Titanium (corpse flower)

Amorphophallus Titanium flower

Alright, so this flower is suffering from a serious case of name confusion.  The layman’s term for this monstrosity is a “corpse flower,” as it clearly resembles a dumpster holding an inverted and completely stiff corpse protruding into the air, not unlike something you would see on Law & Order.

However, the Latin seems to present a different story.  Now, I’m no expert, but from what I know of Latin, “morph” means “change,” “phallus” means “dong” and “titanium” means “metal.”  No matter how expensive or rare this flower may be, NEVER give a woman a “Metal Dong-Changer” as a present.

3.  Bowiea Volubilis (Climbing Onion)
Bowiea Volubilis

If your favorite potato chip is plain, your favorite ice cream is vanilla, and your favorite amusement park ride is none, then this is a flower for you!

Finally, there is a plant that presents all of the wonder and majesty of a sprig of parsley right in the comfort of your own home.  The Climbing Onion (as it is called since it appears to grow vertically and causes weeping from depression) is the definition of bland.  For anyone looking for the natural beauty of cilantro in your home, get your hands on a Climbing Onion...and prepare to be bored.

4.  Cereus Night Blooming Flower
Cereus Night Blooming Flower

Okay, this flower is kind of pretty....

But it reminds me of something sinister.....

Where have I seen this before?

scary flowers

Aaah!

There's just something about the weird angle of this flower that reminds me of Alien. Let's be honest: any flower that appears to be harnessing the power of James Cameron, whether it looks like an alien or an avatar or the Titanic, needs to not be a flower.

For some reason, knowing that this is a “night blooming flower” makes it even more terrifying.  I don’t know about you, but I like my flowers to obey the rules of science and die in the darkness; NOT to thrive.

5.  Aristolochia Gigantea (Birthwort)
Birthworth flower

A.  This flower appears to be made out of a velour jumpsuit
B.  Say the word “Birthwort” out loud a few times.  Go ahead.  I’ll wait.
C.  This flower sucks.

Ignore the fact that it’s Georgia O’Keefe meets 1980’s hair metal; this flower is a waste of space and chlorophyll.  I would rather breathe in the poisonous CO2 that this flower turns into oxygen than have this dissected pair of MC Hammer pants anywhere near my property.  This flower is ridiculous, and the fact that it is the size of a small boat sail makes it significantly worse.

6.  Rafflesia Arnoldii

Rafflesia Arnoldii flower

There is only one way to put this accurately; the Rafflesia Arnoldii is native to this region:

...and it's nectar can be harvested to make this product:

This is the most ridiculous flower I have ever seen, and I’m having the hardest time coming up with one practical purpose for a flower this insane. I don't even know many people with houses big enough to house one of these enormous blossoms!

Perhaps its size is to absorb rain, which helps to power the magic of colored light?

Perhaps the center spikes are meant as protection from any Oompa Loompas who may want to eat the sweet, sweet chocolate that can be found on the inside?

I guess it’s just an ugly accident of evolution.

While flowers are usually the most colorful and magical examples of nature’s beauty, sometimes they remind us of the ugliness of life instead. Avoid giving these flowers at all costs...unless you want to insult the recipient.

Next Day Flowers for the Romantic in All of Us

Do you enjoy surprises? How does the idea that you are so special that someone has taken time out of his or her day to have flowers delivered to you sound? While we all enjoy the idea of being brought flowers in person, sometimes that just is not possible due to work or other life commitments. One problem that occurs with normal flower delivery is that you cannot really be as spontaneous as you want to be. You have to schedule your spur of the moment desire for several days down the road, which sort of takes away the spur of the moment part of it. Next day flower delivery completely changes all that. The ability to order something special for your sweetheart and have it show up the next day is simply fantastic.

You could wait until she is at the office and send them to her with a simple note, so she gets to be the center of attention for the day. All of her co-workers will know that someone thinks she is special, and she will get to spend the day feeling special and showing off the symbol of love you have sent her. The problem with normal flower delivery would be that you have to make sure she will be in the office three or four days from now and have to try to avoid meetings, emergencies, and all manner of things that could get in the way. If you use next day flower delivery, the window of opportunity is a lot shorter. You could casually check her schedule for the next day, and then choose from one of the amazing flower arrangements from serenataflowers.com. As long as you get the order in before 8 p.m., you can have it delivered anywhere in mainland UK.

The flowers do not have to be for people who have an office to fawn over them. The lovely wife who stays at home taking care of the children also needs flowers, and she will get to use the kids as her own personal audience to show her flowers off to, as well as neighbors. She can also share her story as she runs her errands that day. She will know that you are thinking of her and feel extra special on that day. Stay at home moms always have busy schedules that seem to be changing all the time, but with next day flower delivery, you can casually ask her about her plans tomorrow over dinner and still get your order in with enough time for it to arrive and be the perfect surprise. serenataflowers.com offers a very easy next day flower delivery, and, with their wide selection, it will not be hard to find something that she simply loves. Each arrangement is carefully designed by local florists, and each has that personal touch that will leave your sweetheart gushing with appreciation for the gesture that brightens her day.

We all want to make our special someone feel like they are the only person in the world in our eyes, and with next day flower delivery, you do not need to worry about whether or not she will be available when the flowers get there. It is also very good for when you know she is going to have a hard day. Being able to send her flowers that will be a bright spot in an otherwise rough day will always be welcomed, and, with next day flower delivery, she will not have to wait days to be cheered up.

Why You Should Send Flowers Today

Flowers are a great last minute gift. You can get different arrangements for a variety of occasions, and this doesn't just have to be for Valentine's Day. You'll want to make sure that your price point and the overall arrangement is reflective of the event.

Romantic Flowers

Red roses are a staple on Valentine's Day, but there are several other occasions when giving flowers are appropriate. For an anniversary gift choose the same flowers that were used at your wedding, or the same color palette if that's not readily available.

It's important to change up the arrangement when giving flowers several times a year. You can also vary up the type of rose. A spray rose is going to be smaller and come in clusters so you can get several dozen on a budget.

Just Because

You can send flowers to more people than just your family or friends. If you're feeling a little bit left out, then have a bouquet delivered to yourself. This allows you to experiment with different blossoms like Safari Sunset or Yellow Solidago. You can also just order your favorite color by going with irises for a rich purple. The arrangement can  match your taste in decor. Try out hyacinths with twig and twine accents for country style decor.

Flowers can work for a lot of different people so it’s a great gift to show appreciation to someone you might not know that well. Consider giving a small bouquet to your kids’ teachers on the last day of school. The bouquet should be casual with cheerful colors in orange, purple, and yellow. It can even have inexpensive carnations in it.

Engagement Flowers

Sending flowers to celebrate an engagement kicks the wedding celebration off early. You'll want to pick delicate blossoms for this occasion, such as orchids or freesias. It's also appropriate to go with a lighter color palette like what you'd see at weddings. This could include shades of white, purple, cream, and pale pink.

Congratulation Arrangements

Congratulation flowers should be joyful and bright. Celebrate a graduation or promotion by sending an arrangement. This shows that you're proud of the recipient even if you can't be there for the big event. Lilies come in a variety of cheerful colors like pink or magenta. Use smaller and less expensive flowers in the bouquet, such as daises or mums to cut down on costs. You can get the maximum impact by going with long-stem flowers in a tall vase.

7 Edible Flowers

Unless you’re auditioning for the new seasons of Survivor, Fear Factor or So You Think You Can Digest That, there is no reason to ever attempt eating a flower. Although there are quite a few flowers that can be digested safely, there would seem to be no reason to try it, as there are many other nourishing options available (food, for example). Nevertheless, for those who like to try everything once, the following flowers can (though probably shouldn’t) be eaten.

1. Anise Hyssop

Anise Hyssop

Anisius MargeSimpsonous

A member of the mint family, Anise Hyssop can not only be used as a spice or as part of a tea leaf blend, but it can also be eaten whole.

While anise is recognized as the flavor in black licorice, anise extract is actually used in lots of recipes, from pound cakes to liqueur. While these flavors are more subdued, taking a mouthful of anise hyssop is a much more intense experience, and therefore should not be attempted by anyone who hates Jagermeister, or loves their functioning taste buds. Although eating this plant is safe, that does not imply it is enjoyable.

2. Carnation

Carnation

“You’re gonna love it in an instant” …or salad.

Otherwise known as the “poor man’s rose,” the carnation had many uses over the years; hair decoration, 8th grade Valentine’s Day present, lapel decoration for hit men, etc. However, eating the flower gives new meaning to “Carnation Instant Breakfast.”

Although carnations seem sweet and light, they actually taste quite peppery and clove-like. While young men should still send chocolates to their prospective lovers, it is nice to know that if the budget is tight and the recipient likes tacos, a carnation can easily serve as both a romantic gesture as well as a spicy treat.

3. Chamomile

Chamomile

Tea tastes better when brewed in your mouth.

While the petals are the only part of the chamomile plant that are edible, they are also the main ingredient in chamomile tea. This means that for anyone who loves a hot mug of chamomile but just can’t wait the 60 seconds it takes to microwave water, eating chamomile straight off the vine is the way to go.

Nature’s equivalent to drinking Pepsi syrup directly from the back of the soda fountain, eating chamomile leaves is the perfect snack for those looking to enjoy the relaxing taste of tea in the same way a cocaine addict would. By rubbing the leaves on your gums, you can ensure that you enjoy the entire chamomile experience without the embarrassment of having to ask anyone for a cup of hot water.

4. Dandelion

Dandelion

Photo credit: every photography student, ever.

Another “petals-only” flower, the dandelion is remarkably high in vitamins and minerals. Rocking insanely high amounts of Vitamins A, C, K & H as well as beta carotene, lutein and fiber, a dandelion could be an important part of a balanced diet, if it wasn’t for the fact that it was a dandelion.

While I’m sure that cats are high in protein and knives are high in iron, that doesn’t mean that eating them becomes logical. (Although dandelion wine is popular, that is an entirely different story; once a bizarre food becomes alcoholic, it is safe for ingestion again.) Those looking to supplement their diet with vitamins should try taking vitamins. Everyone else should try not eating the weeds out of their front lawns.

5. Lilac

Lilac

Shoe bottoms + lemonade = the taste of lilac.

Popular in gardens and floral arrangements, lilacs are also popular in the lunch boxes of weirdoes. Exuding the taste of lemon with just the slightest hint of dirt, a lilac can be just the thing for those looking for a snack in the middle of the day (or forest).

While far more people grow lilacs than eat them, the fact remains that they are a popular dish in the plant-eating community. Although lilacs are a part of the olive family, it is important to view them as the distant cousin that may be adopted, and not a younger sibling who tastes just as good on pizza.

6. Roses

Roses

Avoid eating the thorns.

A favorite of florists, romantics, and college football fans, the rose has long been the dominant member of the flower community. There is no more elegant way of saying “I love you,” “I miss you” or “I’m hungry” than with a rose.

Apparently, the rose tastes as good as it smells, as there are a large number of recipes featuring rose hips as a primary ingredient, including rose candy, jelly and soup. While it’s probably best not to sink your teeth into anything delivered by a florist (as roses can occasionally be treated with preservatives to make them stay pretty), anything found growing in the ground is fair game.

7. Sunflower

Sunflowers

Sunflowers are neither the sun, nor flowers.

While sunflower seeds have been a staple amongst baseball players and farmers for generations, the petals of sunflowers can also be eaten (though they have yet to be released in ranch flavor).

Sunflower seeds, oil, and petals can all be used in recipes, including breads, pasta, and cookies. While many of these recipes require special processing of the plant, impatient hobos everywhere can rest easy knowing they can pluck and eat the yellow petals right off the vine. While the taste is somewhat bitter, eating this plant remains perfectly safe.

Conclusion:

Though there are many who would be reluctant to try them, all of the aforementioned plants are safe for eating. Whether you are simply trying to get in tune with nature or are an escaped fugitive on the run from the feds, eating flowers could be a new (and certainly interesting) option for those looking for different meal options.

Indulge Yourself and Others With Flowers

When it comes to getting flowers, you do not have to wait for someone else to give them to you. You can buy yourself flowers all year long to celebrate or reward something good you did or a goal you reached. You do not need an excuse or you can make all the excuses you want to indulge yourself with flowers. It does not matter what time of the year it is because you have access to flowers all year long and you have the opportunity to pick out different flowers each time.

An easy way to brighten the mood at work is to have fresh flowers in your office or leave them in common areas to improve the mood of everyone. Giving flowers to someone who is ill or been hurt will help bring his or her mood up, which is why flowers are a popular choice for people who are in the hospital. Many people indulge themselves with flowers and enjoy them while they are healthy, than use the wilting flower for something else. People into crafts can find just about anything to use dried flowers in their projects. Flowers, even dried ones, can add something extra to scrapbooks and journals as a way to express creativity.

Fresh flowers can improve your mood, brighten up a room, and bring fragrance to your home. Indulge yourself with fresh flowers more often and you will never understand how you went without them. You do not need to depend on someone else to brighten up your day with flowers; you can do it yourself every day.

Selecting Modern Flowers

Modern flowers are graphic and colorful. This is a way to differentiate your floral gifts from arrangements you might have sent in the past. The bouquets can also use exotic blossoms and fit in with the recipients’ contemporary decor.

Types of Flowers

Contemporary flowers should have an exotic or unique feeling to the bouquet. Your arrangement can even include bamboo. These flowers can be more expensive. Since it does make such a big statement you may only need two or three in a bouquet instead of the traditional dozen. Types of contemporary flowers could include Safari Sunset, orchids, Heliconia, or pincushion proteas.

The arrangement itself can look tropical even if you are going with less expensive flowers. This type of arrangement should have a lot of spiky leaves, grass, or palm fronds. You can still give a modern look to the recipient’s favorite roses or daises.

Orchids allow you to send an arrangement in the form of a house plant. You could even send several different pots to make a larger centerpiece. This uses a lot of greenery, moss, and dramatic pots. The flowers themselves are very simplistic so it's a way to add color into the room in a modern way.

You can also order traditional roses, but get a unique take on a bouquet. Stick with just one color and skip any greenery. Find arrangements that are very simplistic and low. The container itself should just feature a round circle or square so the focus is on the blossoms. Geometric shapes are popular in modern design. You can go with traditional clear glass vases for brighter blossoms like red or yellow. If you just have basic white roses then spice up the selection with painted glass in a fun orange or dramatic black.

Colors for Modern Flowers

Modern colors should either be bold or neutral. For neutral color flowers, the arrangement should be unusual. This could be something simple like using a square glass vase with white roses instead of a round container. Green can also add a subtle sculptural element to a bouquet because it will blend in with the leaves while still giving it texture. This could be a flower like frog buttons or oversized ruscus leaves.

You can also be more daring with your floral arrangement choices. For springtime, combine yellow and orange lilies. You'll want to add in trendy colors that you don't usually see in bouquets. Chocolate brown is a big color in home decorating. Look for vases made from faux wood or order bouquets with twig details.

Quick Facts About the Worlds Number One Holiday Plant : The Poinsettia

Every holiday season the poinsettia plant makes an appearance. This vibrant, bright red and green potted flower plant makes its way onto the holiday scene around mid-November and by the end of December it has been spread all around the United States and United Kingdom. While this popular holiday plant has been a part of Christmas and holiday traditions for a number of years, very few people know anything about the poinsettia plant.

The poinsettia plant actually has a rich history and some very interesting facts. Here is a quick fact guide to some of the more interesting poinsettia plant facts.

The poinsettia plant originates from Mexico and Central America. It was often used by the Aztecs and other ancient cultures for medicinal purposes. The poinsettia plant has many qualities that serve as a fever reducing plant. These ancient cultures also used the poinsettia plant to make reddish/purple dyes out of the leaves.

The poinsettia plant came to America from Mexico. It was brought to America in 1825 by a man named Joel Poinsett, who brought it back while serving as an ambassador to Mexico. He noticed the bright red color of the plant, cut off a small piece and brought it back to the States where he started to grow batches of it. After growing huge amounts, he gave the plant to friends and family members. One of his friends, Paul Ecke, started the largest poinsettia growing facility in the world.

The most popular variety of poinsettias is that of the red flowered variety. However, there are over a hundred different varieties of poinsettias ranging in bright whites, pinks and green colored poinsettias. The red variety makes up over 75% of the holiday poinsettia sales.

Over 61 million poinsettias are sold every year all around the world making the poinsettia plant the most popular potted plant all year round.

Over 80% of the poinsettias sold in the United Kingdom come from the United States. The major distributor of poinsettias from the United States is that of the Paul Ecke Farm located in California.

The flower part of the poinsettia plant is known as a bract. The price of a poinsettia plant is determined by how many blooming bracts there are on the plant and not on how many are about to bloom.

In the United States, December 16 is known as National Poinsetta Day.

Poinsettias are not a poisonous plant. The bracts, or flower, can actually be eaten with no damage done to the body. However, consuming large quantities of bracts can cause a slight stomach ache.

When to Buy Your Mother Flowers.

We have been programmed to know when to celebrate and who to celebrate with since we were young. We know exactly when we should honor our mother with gifts and flowers, but there are some occasions that get overlooked. On any occasion your mother deserves flowers, but here are some moments where flowers are the perfect gift.

Although the majority of people would never forget to honor their mother on Mother’s Day, sometimes people forget they should always give their mother a beautiful arrangement of flowers. Even if you are giving her another gift, your mother should always have flowers on her day. Even if your mother has passed, buy a bouquet of beautiful flowers and put them near her resting spot or display them in your home in honor of her. Just like giving your mother flowers on Mother’s Day, you should give her flowers on her birthday. It does not matter if you already have a gift for her, she deserves to have flowers.

Both men and women do not realize that their mother should receive flowers on Valentine’s Day. Even if someone else is sending her flowers, you should do the same. It will make her feel loved and brighten up her day even more. Easter is another holiday most people do not think to give their mother flowers. Instead of doing a traditional bouquet, have an arrangement made that would be a unique centerpiece for the table and enjoyment for your mother in the days after the holiday.

Apart from holidays, you should spontaneously send flowers to your mother even if there is no holiday to celebrate. As you get older, you may live out of town or have a family of your own. You do not get to see your mother as much as you would like, but you can send her flowers every now and then when you are thinking about her, when she is sick, or when she loses a friend. Sending your mother flowers will remind her that she is on your mind even if you do not get to spend much time with her.

Ordering flowers online is the best way to send your mother flowers even when you live in the same city. You can decide to send your mother flowers and within minutes they are ordered and being processed to ship. With the convenience of ordering flowers online, you should have no problem sending your mother flowers for no reason at all.

Get a bit Creative About Your Valentine's Day Gift

Choosing the perfect Valentine’s Day gift is something most people keep postponing until the last minute. Sometimes, people take it for granted and sometimes, they are not sure of what to buy for their partner as they keep imagining if their partner would like it or not. Choices of gifts also vary from person to person depending upon their tastes and of course, budget. However, the truth is that your Valentine’s Day gift is indeed a reflective of your love for your partner and not something that you should take for granted or that you choose as per your own taste. It’s indeed more important that you keep your partner’s taste and likings in view while selecting a gift; after all, love is all about deriving pleasure in happiness of your beloved, isn’t it!

During the love-filled season of the week having Valentine’s Day, you can find numerous gift items in the market you can buy for your partner. But you can just get a bit creative to appear full-of-surprises and different from others, even though you buy the same gift items. You can experiment with the presentation of the gift items you select for your partner. For example, if you’re buying two gifts together for your partner, such as some chocolates, and a scarf, you can wrap the chocolates beautifully with the scarf and then, attach a small love note written in your handwriting, such that it doesn’t appear to your partner until the gift is completely unwrapped. This little surprise will not cost you anything significant but will keep this Valentine’s Day fresh in memory for a long time.

You may even choose to go a bit naughty when finding the gift for your Valentine. You can choose sexy lingerie, knickers, or a set of transparent and delicate nightwear that can be sufficient to ignite the fire of sensuality on this special occasion of Valentine’s Day. Getting a bit kinkier, you can get rid of those inhibitions and try blindfolds, scented massage oils, and even things like bodypaints to give yourself and your partner a time of togetherness you both will always cherish. Do remember to complement your selection of a lovely gift with a vibrant red rose, if not an entire bouquet of roses.

5 Ways to use Flowers for Good Feng Shui

Flowers have a common language of beauty and elegance, and are used in feng shui to promote harmony and healing. Feng shui can offer positive and negative energies to flow through the home depending on the placement of furniture and the use of natural elements of wood, metal, fire, water, and earth. The art of feng shui uses flowers to promote positive chi in the home and in the lives of those that practice the ancient art. Here are five ways to use flowers to promote positive feng shui in your home.

1. All flowers and plants that are brought into your home should be alive and vibrant. Dead or dying flowers should be removed immediately because they can bring negative energy to your living area. Although it is possible to use silk flowers to enhance the positive feng shui in your home, fresh promote the most harmony and positive outcomes.

2. Tropical plants and flowers are widely used in homes that practice feng shui because they promote positive growth and health. Tropical plants and flowers are highly regarded as a feng shui filter of toxic energy in the home and are believed to remove the toxins from your home.

3. The color and type of flower used for feng shui is important for the promotion of positive chi, but the leaves of the flower are equally important. Flowers, whose plants have floppy leaves that are round, offer more Yin to the home. The more Yin that is in your home, the more of a calm environment your home will be.

4. Feng shui is not only about spatial and elemental arrangement, but also the use of numbers to promote well being. Flowers arranged in certain multiples can help maintain the harmony of feng shui. Multiples of three are the most widely used in households because the number offsets any relationships that are in disarray. Although feng shui promotes the use of natural elements in all areas of the home, the use of flowers in the bedroom will neutralize the effect of multiples of three rule.

5. Many feng shui teachings also use directional factors in placing elements in the home. Those who use the compass teachings of feng shui should place their plants and flowers in the East to Southeast sections of their homes to maintain an even flow of chi.

Fresh flowers and plants can enhance the beauty of a home, and the use of flowers in feng shui design can promote happiness in your home.

I'm Sorry For Your Loss Can Be Said in Differing Ways with Various Sympathy Arrangements

When a friend, co-worker or loved one loses someone that is close to them, it is human instinct to want to show our support during this time. Sometimes words of encouragement just don't seem enough during these trying times. That is where the sympathy flower arrangement comes in.

Sympathy flower arrangements are a way to show support to friends or loved ones during a time of loss. These arrangements are usually sent to those suffering the loss as a form of encouragement or support during this trying time. It's a way to say "I'm sorry" and "I'm there for you" all in one.

Over the years the type of arrangements that have become popular choices for sympathy arrangements have changed. Some years it was popular to send vases of flowers, other years it was popular to send baskets and wreaths. Here is a look at the various styles of sympathy arrangements that can be sent to someone during their time of grief.

1. Vases. The flower vase is the most traditional and long standing style of sympathy flower arrangements around. While the style of vases might have changed over time, sending an arrangement of flowers in a vase has a long standing tradition when it came to expressing your support during someone's time of grief.

2. Wreaths. It used to be that floral wreath arrangements were reserved for the funeral homes or burial sites. Recently sympathy floral arrangements have started to show up in the form of wreaths. Floral wreaths are practical, long standing floral arrangements that allow the receiver several options as to where to set it throughout their house.

3. Baskets. Sympathy arrangements can also be held in a basket. Baskets can be used to hold a bunch of arranged flowers other times it can hold what is considered a planter. A planter allows the receiver of the arrangement to remove the planter and plant it outdoors where it will bloom and glow and can serve as a lasting reminder of the support and love of the sender.

4. Bouquets. Baskets, wreaths and vases are the most common sympathy floral arrangements, however bouquets are also a means of saying "I'm sorry for your loss". These bouquets are usually made up of white roses and tied neatly with a ribbon or a bow and presented in person.

There is no right or wrong arrangement to send when it comes time to expressing your sympathy for a loss. The important thing is that you are showing your support during someone's time of need.

Gorgeous Flowers for your Mum

Mums are amazing people. They give the warmest hugs, the best advice and the tastiest roast dinners, and whenever you need them, you can guarantee that they’ll be there...your mum is simply irreplaceable. So this year, avoid grabbing a last minute supermarket gift, and buy her something every woman loves...an amazing bouquet of lilies.
Lovely Lilies
Lilies are an amazing flower. Where roses are a romantic, heartfelt flower, lilies signify much deeper concepts. In the bible, they are described as symbolising purity and radiance of the soul, and are often linked to the Virgin Mary. Chinese Proverbs proclaim lilies embody the Summer, and suggest wealth and abundance. One thing everyone agrees on is that lilies are a personal flower, radiating happiness and family...making them perfect for sending to your Mum.
Bouquets
Lilies can be a difficult flower to mix into a bouquet, as they can be difficult to find and their bright, vibrant colours are often unrivalled. SerenataFlowers.com have a range of gorgeous bouquets containing lilies however, and there is one for every flower lover.
Pretty Pinks
My favourite is the “Someday Dreamer” arrangement, combining roses and lilies with a variety of smaller flowers for an effect that looks just like you’re watching the sunset over a field of wild flowers. The vibrant pinks are such an uplifting, Spring like colour, they can’t fail to make you smile. The “Madonna” bouquet also features vibrant pink lilies, mixed with lighter pink roses and gorgeous waxflowers, for a selection which smells and looks divine.
Vivid Neons
If pink isn’t your Mum’s thing, SerenataFlowers.com offer many other colours too. “Scented Pleasure” is a neon pink bouquet accentuated with gorgeous satin white chrysanthemums. It’s a striking arrangement that reminds me of hot Summer days and fruity cocktails...”Sugar Hill” is a similarly striking bouquet featuring Aztec gold lilies paired with vivid purple colours.
Amazing Extras
Once you’ve chosen the perfect arrangement, check out the optional extras you can send with the flowers. You can enlarge the bouquet from standard to deluxe or grandissimo, add extra presents such as chocolates, balloons and teddies, and when your ordering from the UK’s leading online florist offering free delivery 6 days a week, you know your gift will arrive on time and make your Mum’s day.

How To Pick Silk Flowers To Give As A Gift

Silk flowers can work as a Valentine's Day gift for someone who has allergies. It also helps you to cut down on costs. You can even send silk flower arrangements the way you would a traditional rose bouquet. This is a lasting present that can still look high end.

Be bold with your selection. Depending on the time of year, your loved one's favorite flower, such as an orchid might be out of your price range or too difficult to care for. Going with a silk version still gives the arrangement modern shapes and vivid colors. It’s a way to give a house plant to someone who doesn’t have a green thumb. Make sure the arrangement looks convincing with pebbles or moss on top.

You can also really experiment with color in a silk floral arrangement. If you don't know what the recipient's favorite flower is then go with a favorite color instead. This can be difficult to find in some shades, such as black or blue. Instead, artificial flowers really allow you to bring in shades that you wouldn't normally find in nature.

Consider going with a neutral plant. Since this arrangement is going to last for so long you might want a piece that will work with all different kinds of decor. You can pick up a basic green house plant. This can also be a masculine gift. Depending on the size and pot a fern can feel modern or elegant.

For a modern vase look for a square or circular white pot. A more traditional style would bring in glass or metal tones. It's important to hide the stems of faux flowers for a more realistic look. Going with opaque or painted glass can accomplish this.

Go for volume. You can get larger bouquets of traditional roses to make a dramatic impact because it is so inexpensive. A dozen roses can be a symbol of love. It can also be suitable for holidays if you look for velvet blossoms. It is important to go for high-end materials that look as natural as possible. This includes not only the flowers, but the pollen and leaves too.

Another option to change up the size is to go with lifelike floor plants. This can add a tropical feeling to the room. You might even be able to get a miniature silk palm tree. This is a way to give plants as gifts, but change it up from the traditional or expected blossoms.

Freesia is for More than Fragrance.

Freesia is not only a popular scent for perfumes, but also extremely popular in flower bouquets. These beautiful, fragrant flowers can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any flower arrangement. In fact, they are one of the most widely grown and popular flowers in the world. Freesias come in many different colors, though the pink and white freesia tend to be the most common colors that people choose. Other colors that these beautiful petals come in are yellow, red, and even purple. Another reason that they are so popular is because of the availability of the flower. Though it tends to peak in the spring, the freesia flower is available all throughout the year. This makes choosing it in your next floral arrangement an easy choice.

Depending on the openness of the buds and the color of the petals, these flowers can convey many different types of messages. Traditionally, these flowers symbolized friendship, but today they are used for many different feelings. Similar to roses, these flowers have many things to convey. For example, the white freesia shows innocence. It is frequently used for weddings, as well as occasionally for funeral arrangements. The yellow freesia is still most commonly said to show friendship and happiness.

These beautiful flowers became popular in the 19th Century. Feelings and emotions were generally not actually discussed, and in fact, usually a flower was exchanged instead of words. Because of this, many flowers that we know today to be popular actually gained their popularity during the Victorian Era.

The freesia plant originated in Africa. In fact, there are 16 species of the flower that are native to Africa. Even today these flowers have a difficult time growing in many parts of the world, including most of the United States. They can be cultivated in greenhouses, and with careful attention they can be grown in parts of California, but otherwise the US is not hospitable to the plant.

If you are looking for a beautiful flower that will fill the house with amazing scents, you will want to consider freesia. These flowers are known as some of the most fragrant flowers in the world, and work well in almost all floral arrangements. With many different colors to choose from, the freesia flower will be a great addition to any bouquet or theme. They generally last between 10 and 14 days while in a vase, and can also be preserved through drying, pressing, or other preservation methods.

Celebrate With Flowers.

Anniversaries are a celebration of important events that happened in our past. All of the important events of our past celebrated with flowers, so the anniversary should as well. The mostly celebrated anniversary is for a wedding, but recently people are celebrating the lives of their friends on the day of their passing and using flowers as a part of the celebration. No matter what kind of anniversary you are celebrating, flowers will always complete the event.

Anniversaries that are shared to commemorate a romantic relationship milestone need red roses to celebrate. Whether you are in a new relationship and start off with a box of chocolates and a teddy bear, or you’re in a long-term relationship and you're going on a trip, a celebration of devotion and love is not complete without a beautiful arrangement of flowers. Wedding anniversaries require more attention to detail because you are not celebrating another year; you are celebrating the start to another year together. Even if your plans for your anniversary are simple, flowers should be present to set the right tone to the celebration.

Whether it is your first anniversary or your 50th anniversary, a beautiful flower arrangement will say everything that needs to be said. Some couples have a tradition and use the same flowers that were in their wedding and some couples like to have a mixture of flowers or choose something new every year. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate your wedding anniversary, flowers should never be absent from your celebration. This year be creative with your flowers. Even if you are traditional, find a unique way to display the arrangement to change things up a bit.

Some people celebrate a different kind of anniversary, like the life of a loved one who has passed. Celebration of life is most common at the birth of a child, but more people are beginning traditions to celebrate the lives of the ones who have passed. Groups of people get together, share stories, and toast to their loved one or friend. Celebrating someone’s life calls for a beautiful flower arrangement in his or her honor. Carnations are used to honor because they signify pride and beauty. Some people also choose to have a beautiful arrangement of Daffodils because they represent rebirth and eternal life. No matter the anniversary or the feelings behind them, a flower arrangement can make all the difference in the world.

Experts strongly suggest that everyone participate in exercise and lifestyle changes to relieve the amount of stress in our lives. According to a recent behavioral study conducted in Scotland at Strathclyde University, nature is the simplest way to reduce stress and improve our emotions. The study suggests that flowers trigger positive emotions and affects behavior in a positive way.

During the nine-month study, emotional and behavioral responses from participants were monitored when receiving flowers. The study shows that flowers are a healthy and natural way to moderate your mood. When the participants were given flowers, they had an immediate response of happiness. The reaction was universal among all participant age groups.

The long-term exposure to the flowers in the study showed a long-term positive effect on the participant’s mood. Participants who reported feelings of depression and agitation before receiving flowers showed more enjoyment and satisfaction. The study also showed that flowers create an intimate connection between friends and family. When a participant sent flowers to someone they cared about, they instantly felt better.

In addition to the participants of the study held at the University, some people were studied in their homes. Home participants displayed flowers in their home to bring in positive feelings. The study concluded that people that have fresh flowers in their home have feelings of happiness that last for a while. Flowers in the home also create a feeling of sharing when you have guests over. How to Turn Delivery Flowers into a Wedding Centrepiece.

Having flowers delivered can save you a lot of money. You could order your wedding bouquet and the groom boutonniere locally. Then cut down on costs by going with delivery flowers for the table.

Decide on your skill level and time line. You can save a lot of money by ordering your flowers loose instead of in an arrangement. Then you can arrange the pieces yourself or have your bridal party do it. However, this can cause a little bit of stress and can be distracting. You might want to just order a ready-made arrangement for simplicity.

Follow trends to make your centerpieces stand out. Baby's breath isn't something that you see a lot of in wedding centerpieces although it's still a staple in arrangements. Ask your florist to skip this for a more streamlined look. You can also just change up how it's used. It could surround a perimeter of roses instead of being interspersed throughout the bouquet as it usually is. More modern arrangements use a lot of greenery or just focus solely on flowers.

Look for an arrangement that has a lot of height to it. Long stem roses are classic and give you an elegant feeling. For a spring wedding you can go with tulips. You can also create this yourself by adding in inexpensive twigs or crystals after you get the flowers.

Make unusual selections. This is one of the advantages to having flowers delivered. You are going to have a wider variety than if you were just shopping locally. They can still match within the theme of your wedding. For a garden event or spring time wedding go with more of a casual look. This can incorporate inexpensive gerberas daises and chrysanthemums. Skip the traditional glass vase and go for a fabric or burlap box.

You will need to schedule your delivery carefully so that the flowers are fresh when you receive them. Read the item descriptions to make sure that you know exactly what state the flowers arrive in. The blossoms might come closed or you may have to pay extra for a vase. Choosing a reputable florist helps ensure that your big day goes smoothly.

Personalize your centerpiece. For weddings the flowers are the basis for customization. You could get wood letters at craft stores to spell out your new monogram and affix it to wooden boxes to use as your vase. Then you’ll have a limitless selection of colors because you choose almost any paint tone.

The various Cultural Symbolism Behind the Lily Flower

To an outsider a long stemmed, white flower might just appear to be a lily. However, a lily can stand for more than just a flower. The lily flower has dozens of hidden symbolic meanings behind it. There are rich cultural meanings, religious meanings and even superstitious meanings.

There are so many different meanings behind the lily flower that it could fill a whole book's worth of pages. Here is a brief overview of some of the more popular symbolic meanings behind the lily flower.

Christian Art/Symbolism. Lilies have often been used in various religious art pieces where the Virgin Mary has been depicted. She is often painted holding these long-stemmed white flowers. The lilies in this instance develop the meaning of spirituality and purity. The most popular Christian art piece is that of the angel Gabriel holding out a white lily to Mary when he announced she would be with child. This stands for her virginity, spirituality and innocence.

Tradition of the Rose or the Lily. In ancient Greek cultures there was often a practice of approaching an expectant mother with the option to choose a lily or a rose. If the rose was chosen it was thought the child would be a girl and if the mother chose a lily then it would be a boy.

Good Luck Charm. Many people in Chinese cultures use the lily flower as a symbol of good luck and abundance of wealth. It is believed that giving the gift of a white lily is to grant the receiver of the flower an immense amount of good luck or wish them a lot of wealth.

Greek/Roman Mythology. The Lily is believed to be a product that developed from the milk of the queen of the gods, Hera or Juno, to those that follow Roman mythology. This makes the lily a very highly respected and honored flower amongst those who follow Greek or Roman mythology. Due to the high level of this flower it is one of the greatest flowers that can be given in mythology.

A Symbol of Egypt. Due to the horn shape of the lily flower it became a symbol of the norther Egyptian area during ancient cultural times. The similarities in shape and size made the two items linked together. Many Egyptian Kings and Queens had the symbol of the lily painted onto the tombs.

Roman Goddess. The lily is the main symbol for the Roman Goddess known as Venus. It shows her purity and sexuality, which are what lily's main symbolism stand for.

Romantic flowers: a guide for perplexed paramours

Send someone a bunch of long-distance kisses; It’s a gesture that’s quaintly old fashioned, But you’ll weaken the knees of the trendiest lover With sweet petals that whisper of passion.

There’s this girl, you see (it always starts like that, doesn’t it?). And you’ve got your eye on her (or your arm round her, or you heart in her pocket). And you’d like to send her some flowers. And you’ve got absolutely no clue how to choose the right ones. Well, sigh no more, gentlemen, sigh no more. If romance and flowers are on the agenda, we’ll show you how to ensure you make the perfect presentation.

When it comes to flower delivery for a romantic occasion, there’s no easy one-size-fits-all approach. The blossoms must suit the stage of seduction. But fear not, this guide to sending romantic flowers by post from top-notch florist serenata Flowers will see you crowned Prince Charming of the petal world in no time.

From a distance

“From a distance, the world looks blue and green, and the snow capped mountains white…” It’s a shocking song, but it holds some pretty good advice for the fellow whoshys been admiring someone from afar. Blue, green, white… no mention of red, now, is there? That’s right: first-time flowers are not about laying on the romance thick if you’ve not even shared a cup of coffee with your cutie. Keep it friendly and light at first; you’ve got to save the fireworks for later.

What’s more, the first bunch of flowers you send to the nubile nymph that you’d like to see more of (or ‘more often’, should we say, as this piquing-of-interests period is all about chivalry and decorum), will set the tone of any togetherness that may ensure, so choose wisely, dear Romeo.

This bunch is also about letting her know a bit more about you – and there are more ways of doing that than spelling it out in the accompanying note. Are you a practical, happy-go-lucky fellow? Gerberas in yellows or oranges are a good bet. A little bit of a dark horse? Try a single green orchid stem for far-eastern mystique. Roses? Hold ya horses, mister. As a general rule, steer clear of roses, and any flowers that are red, pink or white. Something seasonal and bright will get her heart racing without making her want to run away.

Prelude to a kiss

When they say ‘timing is everything’, they don’t just mean you mustn’t be late to your rendez-vous. They mean you’ll do yourself a lot of favours by sending her a bunch of flowers the morning of the big date.

Romance is in the air, and if you give her an opportunity to inhale it – by sending some lush scented flowers, for example – it’ll be firmly in her head by the time you meet for dinner.

Our recommendation: pink lilies hint of romance without being too pushy, and mixed or all-white freesias are a glamorous yet girly treat – and they all smell fabulous!

The morning after Hot diggity, Don Juan. That was some date! Now you can get bring out the roses, oh yes. But not the red ones, just yet, mind you. You might be feeling like the king of the world, but she might only fancy being your princess for a bit. So stick to pinks or whites.

Send yellow roses at your peril – they signify friendship (and, some say, infidelity). Don’t say we didn’t warn you…

Random acts of romance

Girls are big on important dates. Unfortunately, guys don’t always know when those are. She’ll never forgive you for missing the big ones (Valentine’s, birthdays, annual anniversaries), of course. But there’s a flipside to that: she’ll favour you forever if you remember the little ones… especially if she’s forgotten (or doesn’t know them herself).

Try a dozen red roses for “xxx days since you first made my heart skip a beat”, or a Pink-A-Boo gift wrap a month after that flirtatious dance you shared – perhaps some crimson gerberas for that one-month milestone? Make up occasions as you go along, and you’ll always be one step and a hundred bonus points ahead.

Rekindling the flame

You’ve got your favourite bars, you favourite restaurants, your favourite TV shows, your favourite ready meals. And this spells real trouble for romance. But you can stop the ennui. Youshyll never be scolded for sending a bunch of red roses, but there are other tricks you can try, too: a single rose to her desk, a bunch of sunflowers for a Saturday morning delivery… or, for the ultimate in romance rekindling, a bunch of flowers just like the ones you sent her the very first time.

So when it comes to flower delivery London or flowers UK for your friskiest flirt or your old favourite flame, turn your mind to her for inspiration… and then turn your browser to serenata flowers for the finest and fanciest fulfilment.

How to choose the perfect birthday flowers

Flowers: never the wrong size, the wrong fashion, the wrong message, the wrong colour. And, even if they are, you donshyt have to live with them forever. What could be a more perfect birthday gift?

shyHa! But thatshys exactly what makes birthday flowers such an abominable ideashy cry the killjoys - clearly ones whoshyve never been festooned with frivolous floral treats. shyBirthday presents should be long-lasting and very personal. flowers just donshyt cut it.shy Well, weshyve got news for you, party poopers:

Bestow on somebody a bright bouquet
Thatshys bursting with buds of their favourite flavour;
Thereshys no better way for a friend or a lover
To savour the colour of their happy day.

Flowers can convey a very personal birthday message - and create an impression thatshys remembered long after the candles have been blown out. How so? Just follow these three easy steps for choosing the perfect birthday flowers for a very special person:

1. Conjure up a picture of your birthday buddy
What colour is that top theyshyre donning? Thatshys a good bet for deciding on the colour of the flowers. If the celebrantshys penchant for pale skin and heavy eyeliner means the top is never anything besides black, no need to despair. Deep blood reds will probably go down a treat, and purpleshys got a mystical quality thatshys often much admired by the less conventional.

2. Picture your birthday buddyshys boudoir

A manshys home is his castle, but his bedroomshys the mirror of his style. That goes for women, too. And, mixed metaphors aside, will give you a good gauge for choosing the style of the birthday flowers. If the bedshys draped in a monotone blanket or geometric duvet, chances are this person would pick a more contemporary or architectural arrangemnent. Candlewicked spreads, quilts and frills: a traditional posy will go down a treat. Are those Indian or Eastern throws and velvety cushions I spy? A retro bouquet will blow their mind.

3. And now: whatshys their favourite genre of film?
Romance and rom-com gluttons will be laughing and loving if you present them with roses. Action-addict amies - try gerberas, thistles, or sunflowers. Only art house will do? tulips are the choice du jour for those continental cognoscenti. Sci fi, suspense or Asian cinema? Why, orchids, of course! And lilies or freesias will make those period-drama pleasure-seekers go quite weak at the knees.

Birthdays, you see, are all about them, them, them. What do they like best? And choosing the perfect birthday flowers is really easy if you spend a few minutes thinking about the recipient - not how youshyd like them to be, but how they really are. And when they receive some flowers that reflect a little bit of themselves, theyshyll be thrilled: because it means youshyve taken the time to get to know them. Add a short message card mentioning a random memorable day when they made you smile, and you can be sure those birthday flowers will stay fresh in their mind even after the last petal has wilted. And thatshys quite a bit longer than youshyd think, if you send those birthday flowers from us.

Sending to someone you donshyt know to well? You could always choose this more traditional route:

Month Traditional flower Serenatashys pick
January Carnation or Snowdrop Hyacinth
February Violet or Primrose Roses
March Jonquil or Daffodil Tulips
April Sweet pea Celosia
May Lily of the Valley or Hawthorn Peonies
June Rose or Honeysuckle Curcuma

Fresher flowers, eh?

Phospholipase D might sound like the bastard son of an ancient Greek and a Bronx rapper, but the truth is far less pleasant. It's the enzyme that breaks down the cell membranes of cut flowers and causes them to wilt.

Fortunately, some bright sparks at a Canadian university have found an antidote. Thanks to a plant molecule called hexanal, flower lovers can look forward to their roses lasting up to twice as long as usual - and blooming even more brightly.

Until you can get your hands on the new elixir, you can try some of these tips for keeping flowers fresher for longer.

Wreath Delivery Options

Sending a wreath is going to really shake up the idea of a traditional floral arrangement. You can use this to express sympathy or it can be a holiday present. This is a gift that the recipient can show of to the entire neighborhood by displaying it on the door.

Floral Wreaths

Floral wreaths are appropriate as sympathy arrangements for funerals. It can even be used with a special wreath stand. It can be gender neutral if you go for a white or yellow color palette for men. These wreaths should be overflowing with flowers. Keep it inexpensive with a rose or carnation combination.

Wreaths incorporate a variety of different blossoms and foliage to fill out the form. More expensive options will just seem to feature entirely flowers. This can also have a lot of foliage in it for a more natural look. If you want a classic sympathy look then stick with white lilies.

Wreaths will of course have the same circle form but the arrangement of flowers can be different. A grouped wreath looks like it has several bouquets of different flowers instead of mixing the blossoms together. The florist can group rose and orchid bouquets singly around a wreath form.

The flower arrangement is also important. Calla lilies can wind around a wreath form or lay across it instead of just facing the front. This creates layers of flowers. The flowers can also form stripes or rings around the wreath. This could have a row of daises and then a row of carnations in different colors for a graphic look.

Holiday Wreaths

Sending a holiday wreath requires you to do a little bit of planning. You want to send it a few weeks in advance so the recipient can use it as part of his or her Christmas decor. You can also really consider the color palette of the exterior of the home to choose the perfect arrangement. This can help you decide on a red, burgundy, white, or gold bow.

Usually a Christmas wreath features a basic evergreen form. The decorations are what make all of the difference. This can look natural and traditional with pinecones and berries. An elegant wreath will have a lot of metallic tones to it. This can even incorporate small ornaments or gilded leaves.

Another fun addition to wreaths is fragrant elements. This could be cinnamon sticks or dried orange slices. Miniature apples match the red and green color palette while being an unusual addition.

Extras in Your Bouquet

When you are looking at flower arrangements, or even thinking about putting one together yourself, you may realize that there is a lot of greenery in there. Generally speaking, there are quite a few leaves, stems, and other sorts of green leafy things in a bouquet. This may get you wondering what exactly goes into the bouquet other than the gorgeous flowers you pick out.

There are many "extras" that may be added to a bouquet of flowers. Some of these are considered greenery, because of their color, while others are just extra. For example, baby's breath is frequently used in bouquets, and most especially with roses. These white sprigs can add a dash of change to a floral arrangement. It also adds a bit of elegance to the whole picture. Other things that may be used could be colored wire, or fake, painted leaves to match the color scheme.

Lamb's ear is a type of greenery that is frequently used. Usually this is a silvery green color, and has a folded tip. This tip is said to resemble the ear of a lamb. Some varieties of the plant have a white line down the edges.

Eucalyptus is not only known for its fragrance, but also as a fairly commonly used green in floral bouquets and arrangements. Small leaves adorn the stalks of this plant. The eucalyptus is used both in single color and multi colored arrangements.

Not as frequently used, but still beautiful is ivy. The ivy plant trails, so it is usually used in things like bridal bouquets. If the flower arrangement is supposed to look fluid or trailing, then ivy will usually be used.

Fatsia leaf is used more in flower arrangements than bouquets, but is gorgeous and frequently used none the less. The leaves of this plant look like wide maple leaves.

No matter what greenery is used in the bouquet or floral arrangement, the main reason for these plants is to help fill out the arrangement. Not only that, the greenery that is used is usually specifically picked to compliment the flowers that are used in the bouquet. In fact, many people don't know that the greenery that is used has significance, as well. Just as the flowers that are used can be used to send a message, the extras that are used can send messages as well. If a fern is used in an arrangement, it could mean confidence and fascination.

Give the Gift of Sunshine in a Flower.

When a person is giving the gift of flowers to someone there is usually a reason behind it. Flowers are given to cheer people up when they are sad, smile when they are mad and feel better when they are sick. Of course, flowers can be given for no reason at all, but in the majority of cases they are given to try and lift the spirits of the gift receiver. With this in mind, nothing lifts the spirits of a person more than receiving a gift that reminds them of the warmth and glow of the sun. While it isn't possible to capture and box up the rays of the sun and give them as a gift to a friend or family member, the bright yellow petals of the sunflower are as close to giving the gift of the sun's rays as a person is going to get.

Sunflowers have long been admired, respected and at times worshiped for their beauty. These naturally grown flowers are known for their long stalks, bright yellow petals and round circular brown centers. Just one look at these beautiful flowers and it is no surprise why these flowers are called sunflowers.

This history behind the gift of sunflowers to cheer people up or lift people's spirits can be traced all the way back to the early years of the first settlers to America. Europeans would come over to the lands known as the Americas where the sunflower grew in abundance and was already being used by many ancient civilizations such as the Incas, Aztecs and Mayans for celebrations, foods and religious symbols. When the Europeans came across the plant they took it back over to Europe where it was often used to spread joy, radiance and happy feelings.

Jump ahead a couple hundred years and the gift of the sunflower hasn't changed. Sunflowers are still used as a form of food by offering people sunflower seeds and sunflower oils. The flowers are also used as bright gifts to various friends and family members. The bright warm feelings that sunflowers seem to produce make it a popular flower choice for get well flower arrangements, spring and summer time flower baskets and sympathy flower arrangements. It is hoped that the warm feelings and happy emotions it entices will spill over and spread to any person who views it.

Next time you see someone down in the dumps or feeling the need to have their spirits lifted, consider giving them the smile-producing gift of a basket or bouquet of sunflowers.

Cheer up the Room with Daisies.

Many people love the look of daisies, and in fact, these flowers are one of the most commonly used flowers for weddings. One thing that many people do not know, though, is that there are many varieties of daisies. Not only do they come in different colors, the actual classifications of daisies are different. In fact, there are thousands of varieties of the flower. This flower has been used for many purposes over the years. Many don't realize that the flower is actually edible. It can, and has been, used to help garnish salads.

It can be very difficult to determine the variety of daisy that you are looking at. In fact, in most cases, it is so difficult that only professional botanists or people who have studied the daisies in detail are able to make these distinctions. Sometimes, it can be simple to narrow down which varieties the flowers may be. For example, the African Daisy, Mexican Flame Vine, and Firewheel varieties are all very vibrant in color.

The gerbera daisy is the most common type to use. In fact, these flowers are ranked number five in the list of most popular flowers worldwide. These daisies are some of the largest, and in many cases, some of the most vibrantly colored. In matter of size, many people feel that they have large enough heads to be compared to sunflowers. Gerbera daisies come in a large variety of colors, and therefore serve many purposes.

It was not until the late 1800's that these flowers were first cultivated. Though they were found in South Africa, they were cultivated in England and the Netherlands.

These flowers are said to have a meaning of beauty and cheerfulness. Because of this, they are frequently used in "get well soon" bouquets, birthday arrangements, and wedding bouquets. In fact, the bright colors of these flowers have gained popularity for weddings, as people are wanting to add some color and cheerfulness to their wedding parties. Whether bunched with other daisies, or put with flowers of other types, the daisy is a perfect flower for many occassions

Today, daisies grow many places throughout the world. They are readily available through most of the year, in a variety of sizes and colors. A daisy can help add a little bit of cheer to an otherwise sad time, or help show off your happiness. Next time you are in the market for a beautiful flower, don't forget the daisy.

Cheer up the Room with Daisies.

Finding Flowers in the Fall and Winter

As we start to move into the winter months, many people long for summer, or even spring. For some, the reason for this longing is because they miss the beauty that these seasons have. The flowers that are populous in the warmer months are much harder to come by in the fall and winter. Finding great flowers, whether you plan to give them as a gift or decorate your home, is not as difficult as it may seem. There are quite a few types of flowers that are seen as great for the colder months as autumn and winter start to set in.

One of the most popular flowers in the fall is the sunflower. These gorgeous flowers are seen as a harvest flower, since they are popular during the harvest season. They add a touch of color and happiness to almost any arrangement.

Daisies are generally thought of as more of a spring flower, but pairing bright red or orange gerber daisies with other, more subdued flowers can make for the perfect fall or even winter arrangement for your home.

If you are making an arrangement at home, you may want to consider adding in colored leaves that you find in the autumn, or even berries that you might find in the winter. Firethorn has yellow and red berries, and is frequently used for Christmas decorations.

Adding in a little bit of yellow to your flowers is not difficult, as long as you can find a winter jasmine plant. The gorgeous flowers from this plant start showing up late in November. They will usually last all the way until spring.

Even honeysuckle, which many people think of as a spring or summer plant, blooms with fragrance starting generally in December.

In the fall, many oranges and yellows are used. These colors tend to make us think of autumn, and also help many people appreciate the beauty of the season. In the winter, blues, purples, reds, and greens are much more frequently used. During both seasons, more greenery may be added to the floral arrangements, such as eucalyptus or bamboo. These help brighten the scene and also helps us feel more comfortable with the colder seasons. Today it is becoming more and more easy to find the plants and flowers you are interested in, because not all areas of the world are experiencing the same temperature at the same time. You may find that some flowers are more expensive than in the spring or fall, but almost all flower variations are available year round.

6 Ways Plants Are Used as Weapons

Sure they may look harmless, but in the hands of the right people, a plant can be just as deadly as a shotgun. Plants have been an integral part in weapons manufacturing and advancements for thousands of years.

1.  Arrows and Darts

First of all, it is worth noting that these weapons all originate from plants:
• Bows
• Arrows
• Spears
• Darts

All of the above are all derived from the ash, elm and other species of tree. However, assuming that bats, clubs and other wooden objects are too easy, let’s examine how these plant-weapons are enhanced using other plants.

He really should be wearing gloves.

Arrows found dating back to thousands of years ago were found to have grooves cut in the tips with trace elements of such poisons as tubocurarine and curare. These poisons derived from plants act as a paralytic, adding asphyxiation to the arrow or dart wound.  Though it sounds dangerous to be used in hunting, cooking the meat renders the poison ineffective, and therefore there are no chances of second hand exposure.

2.  Poisons

Not only do we have the Egyptians to thank for paper, sandals and Brendan Fraser’s career, but we also can thank them for much of the knowledge of poisons we have today.

When traveling abroad, don’t drink the water.

It is widely believed that the Egyptians were responsible for discovering the poisonous properties of arsenic, henbane and strychnine long before modern medicine existed.  Their experimentation with distillation, fermentation, and eating things that might have been poison single-handedly gave us most of the information we have today about naturally occurring poisons.Whether they were using the seeds, leaves or roots of plants, the Egyptians discovered many a way to weaponize flowers.

3.  Barbed Wire

Although stronger, more flexible versions have been created and implemented since, the first roll of barbed wire was actually a plant.

If you look very closely, you’ll hurt yourself.

The Scottish Thistle is a thorny little cactus flower that possesses hundreds of sharp edges and barbs.  This plant is responsible for saving Scotland from a sneak attack by Norsemen during the 13th century.  Because the Norse were barefoot, their cries of pain from stepping on the thistle alerted the Scottish of their invasion and thereby thwarted their plan.  The Scottish thistle is still honored and held in high regard by the people and government of Scotland.

4.  Biological Weapons

Biological weapons are perhaps the most disturbing and least ethical of all instruments of war, but what many people don’t know is that not all toxins are created in laboratories.

Don’t eat any food with this label

Cytotoxons and mycotoxins, like ricin from the castor bean and various types of fungi, all have serious nerve disrupting properties.  Although much more damaging chemical weapons such as Anthrax has been developed, the amount of raw “mess-you-up” power that occurs in nature is still astonishing.  While most often these sorts of biological weapons are used in crop dusting and pesticide application, they are still capable of bringing about damage in a war.

5.  Curry bomb

It was only a matter of time before Indian food was utilized for its destructive power, and that is precisely what the curry bomb does.  An 88-mm grenade filled with phosphorous, red hot chilies and pepper, this bomb can bring victims to their knees in seconds.

Spicy foods are hazardous to your health

Designed specifically for smoking terrorists out of caves and other hiding places, the curry bomb creates a smoke screen of intense, eye watering, debilitating chili powder in as little as 5 seconds.  This technology can be tank-mounted or hand-held, and is sure to be the single most contributing factor to a decrease in terrorism and an increase in awful action movie lines.

6.  Gunpowder

Stick with me here.  Although it is mostly a product of chemistry, gunpowder (and therefore every firearm, rocket launch and nuclear bomb since) can be attributed directly to plants.

The finished product looks way better than the rendering process

Created by the Chinese over a thousand years ago, gunpowder’s active and most powerful ingredient is potassium nitrate.  By mixing straw (plant), wood ashes (burned plant), and manure (used to be a plant) into a hole and letting the mixture sit and get all scientific on itself for a year, the remaining by product is the incredibly flammable potassium nitrate.  Although the involvement of the plant in the average gun battle seems inconsequential, it is in fact rather vital.

Summary
Plants have been used for evil since the dawn of time.  While they are pretty to look at, lovely to smell, and an excellent get-out-jail-free card for married men around the globe, never underestimate the raw stopping power that lurks just beneath the surface of the average plant.
