Rhone Wines

Along with Burgundy and Bordeaux, one of France most famous wine producing regions. Whilst there are numerous varieties planted it is the Syrah and Grenache grapes that are most prevalent and praise-worthy. Rich, spicy reds are the norm here that are wonderful with food or on their own.

The Rhone Valley is a known wine region in Southeast of France. The valley lies on the north-south side of the Rhone River spanning 150 miles starting from Lyon to the Mediterranean Coast. In the North of Rhone you can see some of the oldest wines produced. The wines are distinctive smelling whites, tannic and huge structures of reds. The South features high quality sweet wines, the everyday reds and some famous wines such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas available at Serenata.

The wines in this region grow in various types of soil and mesoclimates. The north is abundant with granite slopes and a continental climate. The South has a more flat, rocky and sandy land and mild winter climate characteristic of the Mediterranean. The differences are not only seen in the geography, soil or climates but in the varieties and quality of wines produced also. In the Northern part, the most sought after grape for red wine is Syrah reds. For white wines, Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier grapes are abundantly grown.

The South has more varieties of grapes. For red wines, they utilise Syrah, Mourvèdre , Grenache, and Cinsaut. For whites, they make use of the Picpoul, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, and Marsanne varieties. The well-known Southern Rhone blend called GSM utilises Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. The North provides 5 percent of the total wine production in the valley with its vintage and high quality wines known the world over such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage. Hermitage is considered as the ‘manliest’ of all French wines. It is grown in the hills of Hermitage. The South, on the other hand, comprises the majority of wine production at 95 percent but the produce are mostly everyday wines with less known brands. The South though does produce some prestigious varieties such as the Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Châteauneuf-du-Pape means The Pope’s new castle when the pope resided in Avignon in the 14th century. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is composed of the 3 best quality grapes: Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.
