Rosé wines, from the French word meaning “pinkish,” or “blush,” are typically known as a delicate, dry wine. Perhaps exemplified by Anjou rosé from the Loire, the original claret was a pale wine from the Bordeaux region that would be classified as a rosé. The actual color of a fine rosé can range from a pale orange to a vivid near purple, depending on the method used to produce the wine.

There are three different techniques for producing rosé wines. The first is known as skin contact and is used when a rosé is the primary goal of the winemaker. Red-skinned grapes are crushed, and the skins are left in contact with the juice for about two or three days. Afterward, the grapes are pressed and the skins discarded, leaving only a hint of the red coloring during fermentation.

The second method is called “saignée”, or bleeding. In this method, the rosé wines produced are almost a by-product from the production of a deep red wine. This is done by bleeding some of the pink juice from the whole to increase the tannin and color of a red wine. The pink bleed is then separately fermented to produce rosé.

The final method is blending. As the name implies, rosé wines made by this method are produced by blending a red wine with a white wine. Interestingly this method, though frowned on by many high-end winemakers, is growing in popularity with many wine lovers.
