Sangiovese is the deep purple grape that gives Chianti its characteristically bold, edgy flavour. Translated literally, its name means “blood of Jove,” and some wine historians have speculated that the grape has been grown throughout central Italy since the Etruscan era.
In addition to Chianti, Sangiovese is also the main component in Carmignano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Morellino di Scansano wines. The flavour of the grape can also be enjoyed on its own terms in such wines as Rosso di Montalcino and Tignanello, one of the popular new “Super Tuscan” wines.
The grape is adaptable to a wide variety of growing conditions, but soils with high limestone concentrations impart a more elegant flavour. Sangiovese typically has a long growing season which in warmer climates can loan itswines body and richness; in colder climates however, the grapes often become overly acidic and tannic.
