Tempranillo wines are well known for their vibrant ruby color and intensity of flavor. The grapes are early maturing, thriving with even a short growing season, which makes them one of the most famous varieties in Spain. The depth of fruit flavor is intensified by oak barrels, and these wines are prime candidates for aging.

Rioja wine has been made in northern Spain since the 11th century BC when Phoenician settlers first colonised the Iberian Peninsula. The primary grape used in Rioja wine blends is the dusky black grape called Tempranillo which got its name because it ripens several weeks before other Spanish grape varieties. The grape has also been dubbed Spain’s “noble grape” because Rioja Alta wine is of such high quality.
In Spain, the two main wine-producing areas where the grape is grown are Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The grape is also grown extensively throughout Portugal where it’s known either Aragonez or Tinta Roris, and is the primary grape in several types of port. It was carried to the New World by Spanish Conquistadors in the 17th century and thrives today in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico and California. It’s also popular in Australia and South Africa.
In the 1980s a mutant vine was discovered in Rioja, identical to blue-black Tempranillo grapes in every respect except for the fact that it bore greenish yellow fruit. While Tempranillo can tolerate varietyn of growing temperatures, unrelenting heat produces grapes without much sugar or acidity. The grape grows best at high altitudes where no matter how hot it is during the daytime, the temperature drops significantly at night. It has little resistance to vine diseases or pests, and is susceptible to changes in the weather: the grapes constrict under drought conditions and swell when air humidity is high.
Tempranillo is rarely bottled as a varietal wine, but often blended with Grenache, Carignan, Graciano, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in an assortment of wines. The grape has been described by some wine critics as having a gamey flavour underneath its primary notes of strawberry, plum and herb. It goes well with just about any kind of meat dish but particularly pork, roasted or grilled.
