Red Bordaux wine is made from a bland of grapes, typically Cabernet Sauvignon,Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere. White Bordeaux wines is made from Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle.

The Bordaux wine region is divided by the river Gironde. Bordaux wines are often referred to as "Left Bank wine" and "Right Bank wine" which simply refers to the river Gironde.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the predominant grape on the Left Bank and Merlot is the main varietal on the Right Bank. The Right Bank is divided into the sub-regions of Pomerol and St Emilion. The Left Bank is divided into Medoc, Haut-Medoc and Grave. There are then divided into even smaller regions the most important of which are the Margaux, Pauillac, St. Estephe, St Julien and Graves.
