Increasingly though, after many years of inaction, the myriad of vignerons there are waking up to the potential that the natural resources that this region offers - the soils and weather to name but two.
These two wines from the excellent Vignerons de Vicomte show why we increasingly look to the Languedoc as a source of high-quality, modestly priced wines.
2013 Les Cabanelles Merlot
A beautifully crafted, rich Merlot that has real character and sense of place and avoids the slightly confected and manufactured flavours of so many of the similarly priced wines from South America. Soft, fleshy Merlot fruit - nice cherry, blackcurrant and strawberry fruit - intense flavours on the palate with good balance and ripe, supple tannins.
2013 Les Cabanelles Sauvignon Blanc
If you're looking for something a little crisper than the typical Marlborough Sauvignon, with more character than most Sauvignon's at a moderate price then this is for you. A great all-round Sauvignon, with or without food - bright pale green/yellow, fresh flora and mineral aromas, dry, balanced, grapefruity finish
