Indaba, Western Cape, South Africa
Quote: Robert Parker: 'Indaba offers some truly mind-boggling values' Indaba Wines, based in Somerset West, uses various emerging areas of the Cape Winelands such as Robertson, Breede River Valley and Wellington to source the grapes for one of the best value wine ranges to be found in South Africa. The consultant here is the highly-respected and almost legendary Bruwer Raats.
The name Indaba was selected to celebrate the democratisation of South Africa and its meaning being 'a meeting of minds' comes originally from the Zulu. Tribal chiefs would gather their peoples together to discuss issues of great import, thus it is a fitting name to cover the various parties now working in the partnership. In addition to these excellent wines, it is also connected to the Cape Indaba Fund which provides scholarships for deserving applicants to study viticulture and oenology within South Africa.
All are bottled under user-friendly screwcap closures with environmentally friendly packaging.
2013 Indaba Chardonnay
A fresh and lively Chardonnay with good depth of flavour. This has been partly oak-fermented but the oak is well integrated and doesn't spoil the qualities of the excellent fruit. A well balanced, medium weight Chardonnay which works particularly well with food, roast chicken, for example.
2013 Indaba Merlot
Ripe, red berry and plummy fruit on the nose and these continue onto the palate; a touch of dark chocolate and spice too. A soft and velvety red with excellent varietal characteristics. Great with grilled food.
