Amaryllis is fast becoming a popular gift to give and receive during the festive period. With its lily shaped flowers and tall stems, it is ideal for a holiday gift. However, because it originates as a tropical plant, its budding cycle is slightly different and does need a large amount of care. As a result here are some tips and hints on how to look after your Amaryllis this year.
Of all flowering plants, the Amaryllis is one of the simplest to bloom. The plant can flower both indoors and outdoors depending on your preference. When preparing the Amaryllis for planting, ensure that the base and the roots of the plant is placed in some lukewarm water for a few hours. When planting, ensure that you plant the bulbs in nutritious planting compost – plant the bulb up to its neck in this compost. It is important that the plant is placed in direct sunlight as it needs warmth to grow – when watering, do it sparingly until the stems begin to show. Typically each flower stem will create four blooms – these will open between two to three days of each other. Once the blooms have opened, it is important to keep the plant in a cool, shaded place as this will extend its life span. Both heat and light cause the bloom to whither – if placed in a cool place, the blooms will last several days. Once the blooms have faded, you should cut them off about 1.5 inches from the bulb. However, ensure that you do not cut off the leaves – you should then place the plant in a window where it will receive sunlight and warmth. This will allow the plant to photosynthesise – ensure you remain watering it regularly. During the spring months you should move the Amaryllis outside but, don't be alarmed if a few of the leaves wilt and die – this is due to the temperature change. Many people love the Amaryllis because they can decide themselves when they would like it to bloom depending on when they choose to begin and end fertilisation.
